Hennie, tell more about the nice shop. We have Leitz tools over here that I discovered recently. They order Onsud cutters if they don't have them stock.

Thanks Gerald, but their range has a 3mm ballnose only with 3mm shank. I did find one with a 3mm ballnose and 6mm shank, but paid R275.00 for it.

Will check with Somta on price on those 3mm shanks and then try your trick with the 6mm round bar with a 3mm hole someday.

Kobus, I had to use dremel cutters this week.I took a old 12 mm 2 flute cutter that hit a g-clamp and drilled a 3.2 mm hole to fit the cutter with a grub screw to tighten it.Made sure that when the grub screw was tightened it was flat with the dia of the cutter so when it is in the collet it can`t come lose. That way the dremmel cutter went into the hole as deep as it can so there is no movement on the 3.2 cutter when it cuts into the material.I am going to Sedgefield today then I will get it from the workshop and post a pic of it.It is one of those boere manier items that work.Marius the shop is Power tool repairs in Cape Town don`t have the number with me now. they do Dimar bits,I got a catalogue of the cutters, saw blades everything that one might use to cut with.

Kobus, The website is down until 21/12 for maintenance, but look at the catalogs over here http://www.onsrud.com . The guys at Leitz will order for you if they dont have in stock and the pricing is reasonable. Most the tools are solid carbite.

I made a ring from 30mm MDF with a slot cut through on one side to fit my dremmel into the clamp that holds the router. I use this to engrave labels. The dremmel has a very small (2mm) V cutter that I use.

I received a quote from Power Tool Repairs in Cape Town, and I asked them to post it to me and let me know the cost of postage. Everytime I communicate with them they don't add the postage. I get the impression this chap want me to pick up from his shop and don't want to be bothered with making up parcels.

I have used Dremel bits as well, putting the dremel collet into my makita 6mm collet, but when it stresses a bit the dremel collet tends to break....they are very flimsy.

Kobus,
I fit the whole Dremmel machine to the router. They are meant for smaller jobs though. I engrave the Rowmark material with this setup.

Are you going to use the dremel bits?if so arn`t they all 3.2 mm dia. 6MM o/d is a bit to thin to put a grub screw in.What is the max size of your collet 6mm ,8 mm, 12 mm.

Yes you are right again...3.2mm

I have 1/4 inch (6.35mm) a 6mm and 8mm collets on the little Makita.

So maybe a 8mm O/D will be better. I will send you a piece of 8mm round bar or do you prefer rebar....

Or if you can SPLIT the 6 mm length wise so that the big collet clamp the insert.

Getting there. Progress on the bosses round table. Run out of my favourite waterbased varnish, but will give the legs some more once I receive the varnish....My local hardware has promised me for 2 day's now, but still no varnish. The boss is now putting on the little granite pieces into the 4 clovers. Thinking of some dark colour grouting between the pieces to go with the leaves on the border.

I am happy with the way that old BBB cut out the legs....slot into each half, one from the top and the other from the bottom...slid together like a glove. Had some issues with the legs breaking, so I sandwitched them with 4mm plywood. They will not break that I promise you.

The next table will be from proper wood...something like Kiaat..

My late dad was a carpenter / cabinet maker, but sadly he died when I was very young and I did not have the time to learn the tricks of the trade from him. I play around with making stuff for myself, but is not a good cabinet maker. I battle to make nice tight connections on the joints. I think the biggest problem is that I battle to sharpen my chissel properly...

So I decided that old BBB must help in this regard...and since I am at home with some spare time it was time to play.

Made a jig that will hold the pieces with reference to a ZERO point on the same piece of MDF. Did the first cut, but it did not fit so well. Speed was set too high. Adjusted some settings and must say I am please with the result. Will try another type of joint later.

3mm straight cutter. Too short to go right through...will look for a LONG 3mm or 6mm sometime next year.

Kobus,

I like the way you have it now. It would make a strong joint.
