folks - I finished Z axis mod's , the reason I took it up was that i observed pitting marks on my 3d carvings, well now they have gone away by 90% , but a bit is left out - I dont exactly know where the problem lies - but sure some day i will sort it out.

KenC Wed 02 December 2009 21:12

Irfan, what size linear size are you using? & the stroke length?

javeria Thu 03 December 2009 09:20

25mm thk slides 400 mm length, i get a stroke length of just a little less than 5 inches,

you can use 20mm ones too

javeria Fri 11 December 2009 22:14

Irfan, didn't anybody tell you that you cannot do a job like that with open loop steppers? Were you not supposed to be using servos? How did you fix the marks caused by the lost steps? ;);)

domino11 Sat 12 December 2009 19:50

Irfan, Very well done!

Greolt Sun 13 December 2009 21:42

Irfan that looks fantastic.

Did you do the 3D model yourself or someone else?

Look forward to pics of it finished.

Greg

javeria Sun 13 December 2009 22:51

Ah - yes the work is fantastic - but I have just used the relief and changed a couple of tools and waited it out :)

The true credit goes to my Artcam guru for the relief and Mechmate (our beloved G') for executing it out.

Irfan,
Very impressive work.

If you only need to flat the other side, I would suggest using one of these. I use it for all materials including wood and MDF a lot with very good results. it has very good control over the amount of material removal. My sander is 300mm in diameter.
Attachment 7820

If you need contoured or pocketed other side, I think you can make a gypsum replica and use it as jig, in order to machine the inside.

sailfl Mon 21 December 2009 16:22

Irfan,

When you set up the material size, did you reference the Z to the top of the material or the bottom of the material. If it is at the top, use the bottom. See if that doesn't fix the problem.

javeria Mon 21 December 2009 19:57

ah never tried that nils, will do that today

some more pics of the finished inlay work - the person finishing the piece filled the v groove with white metal putty - the lettering looked fabulous now - tomorrow its gonna get polished!

sailfl Sat 26 December 2009 11:24

Irfan,

Is that a triditional design that you used or one you came up with?

Kobus_Joubert Sun 27 December 2009 00:53

Irfan, I am interested to know exactly what ' white metal putty ' is. Any trade name or website that describe it. Will it not shrink and fall out later ?

javeria Sun 27 December 2009 04:43

I think the white metal putty is talc mixed with GP resin,

nils thats a traditional design - art work is available over the internet

Irfan,

Doesn't putty shrink when dry ?
I am asking becoz I am using other material sometimes there is gap, which can be filled with putty or putty may be used as inlay material.
Nice work.

javeria Sun 27 December 2009 09:35

Actually sharma - I don't know much about why he opted for that - I am aware of the fact that putty shrinks, btw what material do you use?

DMS Sun 27 December 2009 09:44

I was trying to upload images when you replied.

I use bone pieces, supplied to me in sheet form glued on board. Which is then cut as inlay material. see example.

one more jali work

hennie Sat 02 January 2010 11:36

Nice Irfan, just to think a couple of years ago we used a fret saw to do those cutouts.Kobus I use a two part epoxy to do those type of fillings,if i work with valchromat I mix some of the dust with the epoxy and once it dries out and it is sealed you can`t notice that it is epoxy and it doesn`t shrinks ( the liquid type )
