Builder's Log Update

Johan,

Congratulations on completing your MechMate and on Serial #56.:)

Here is the Updated Builder's Log.

Please provide the "cutting-size" dimensions for the Builder's Log. Also, please review your entry and provide any changes you want to make.

The best people were born in '55 :)

Kobus_Joubert Sun 28 March 2010 10:45

My OLD sister also....;)

domino11 Sun 28 March 2010 14:57

Most of my Aunts and Uncles in that time frame as well. :)

SumBum Sun 28 March 2010 15:13

Congrats on a fine looking MM. Mikes gonna get worn out giving out all these new numbers.

domino11 Sun 28 March 2010 19:50

Congratulations Johan!

hennie Mon 29 March 2010 01:21

And the peaple from the 70`s made it happen:)

Lex Mon 29 March 2010 01:24

Thanks guys.
Like Gerald mentioned, 1955 was a good year. No middle of the road people. Either you like us or you don't. Always try to leave a lasting impression.:D
On the other hand it is nice to be 35 or so. With this build I realise that white paint and pencil works a lot better than marking blue and a scriber!

LIBBIT Mon 29 March 2010 02:38

Hey ou baas, well done. i'm so jealous.

Been a tough battle moving to ChristChurch, NZ and then 8 months later to Auckland. Cost me hoardes of money. I have completed the panel and wiring as far as I can. Got the legs done to and going to start with the table in a month or so.

Again well done;).

John

Lex Mon 29 March 2010 03:46

Hey John,
Thanks man! Good to hear that you are still alive and kicking.
Good luck with your future and the build.
That kid of yours must be growing fast. No longer a baby after more than a year.

sailfl Mon 29 March 2010 05:29

Lex,

Congratulations and welcome to the club.

Lex Mon 29 March 2010 08:06

Thanks Nils.

hennie Wed 31 March 2010 11:56

Johan what did your machine cost you to complete?

Lex Thu 01 April 2010 00:21

That reminds me. I will have to add up all my invoices over the weekend. A good guess would be be just over R30 000. Will post the exact figure next week.

Rad Racer Fri 02 April 2010 09:47

Good work #56, excellent build.

LIBBIT Thu 15 April 2010 16:23

Hey Johan,

Will u be so kind as to send me an e-mail to [email protected] (work) or [email protected] (private) so we can be in direct contact. I'm gonna try and get the wiring done this weekend well as fas as i can with out the motors and drives.

Thank you, John.

I am still test driving and it is dust every where!

Attachment 9327

Attachment 9328

My first priority is to get the door hanged between the Blue machine and the rest of the Garage.

Kobus_Joubert Sun 25 April 2010 11:47

Lekker !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hennie Sun 25 April 2010 12:06

I will send you some wood then you don`t have an excuse to take the doors of your house of to practice on.:D

Lex Sun 25 April 2010 12:10

Dankie Hennie.
I don't need any extra doors but a dust extractor will be welcome!:D

hennie Sun 25 April 2010 12:18

And a broom:)

Kobus_Joubert Mon 26 April 2010 03:46

Moffie MM in KwaZulu...can only cut HOLLOW DOORS ...:D

Lex Mon 26 April 2010 04:58

Watch it.:p

hennie Mon 26 April 2010 05:39

He has a router that is working:)

Kobus_Joubert Mon 26 April 2010 07:36

Ok ok kick a man when is is down. I phoned the agents today they say.....WHAT !!! a model 3608B Makita...some oke back then used one of those to build a BIG BIG SHIP

Looks like I will have to cut my 1200W Bosch a bit and make a new bracket to get going again.

Gerald D Mon 26 April 2010 07:45

Kobus, don't you just need new brushes?

Kobus_Joubert Mon 26 April 2010 08:05

My mistake...I heard the brushes making a funny noise about 90% through a job...thought if I stop now, I have to start all over again..... lets see if it will finish the cut... next minute it just died. Open it up and saw to my horror that it hooked on one of the small copper strips and ripped it out of the armature....stupid !!

Gerald D Mon 26 April 2010 08:47

Rutherfords are the Makita importers - they may have a spare armature.

Kobus_Joubert Mon 26 April 2010 08:59

Gerald, see post #225. Maybe we should move off Johan's page

Hennie,
I left the doors alone now. Now I am playing around with off cuts in the garage.:)

Attachment 9377

Hooks for the wife's spoons in the kitchen.

Also cut a piece of plastic Forex as a sample for a potential client.

Kobus_Joubert Wed 28 April 2010 01:25

Did you use PECK drilling for the cuphooks ?

Lex Wed 28 April 2010 01:25

I am having two small problems with the machine.
The motors are getting hot after about 40 minutes of cutting. Could only hold my hand on them for 3 seconds. I will have to change the resistors.
The second thing is the gear that slips on the z-axis. This only happens when I do small cuts like in a spiral down or when I tap a millimeter step at a time. It seems to be when there is not a full teeth on the gear, like between two teeth. The gas shock just push it up for about 2mm. I am still thinking how to solve this one!

Lex Wed 28 April 2010 01:26

Yes Kobus. I was pleasantly surpirsed how wel it work. I draw a small circle. Is this the right way to do it? I couldn't do a dot.

Gerald D Wed 28 April 2010 01:44

Johan, to check your motor heating, from this thread I can see:
Stepper motors: Motion king 34HS 9801
Drivers: Gecko G203 V

How many volts DC are you supplying to the Gecko's?
How are the motor wire colours connected to the Gecko's?
How much is the measured resistance of the resistors that you have on the Gecko's?

Lex Wed 28 April 2010 02:08

Gerald the transformer is rated 300VA on primery and 42V on the secondary that supply the PSU board bought from Greg, Edenvale.
Motor wiring are A+ to motor red, A- to motor Yellow. Second coil are B+ to motor white and B- to motor orange.
Resistors are 100K, 0,25W. I haven't confirm this by measuring.
Thanks

Kobus_Joubert Wed 28 April 2010 05:47

The circle thing is the way to do peck drilling in V-Carve pro, I also thought a DOT must be drawn, but when I did the dibbler the other day, I drilled all the holes based on circles.
I think 100k is way TOO much. Try 47k, but I still think the 42V is our problem.

Gerald D Wed 28 April 2010 05:57

From a quick look, the transformer voltage is okay, but your resistor is allowing too much current for a 4amp motor. The resistor should theoretically be 63kiloOhm and I would try 68kiloOhm which is the common one.

Gerald D Wed 28 April 2010 05:59

Sorry Kobus, didn't see you slipping in there - I was looking up some things while you posted.

Kobus_Joubert Wed 28 April 2010 06:22

No problem, remember I ran 68k as well and my motors were pretty hot with the 42V. I now run 47k, ....they are still hottish, but I lost some Torque.

Lex Wed 28 April 2010 06:50

Ok, so I can try a 47k because it looks like you are running on the same voltage as me. I don't think they will be to expensive, so I will buy some 68k's as well.
Kobus by 'hottish', do you mean between frying an egg and the "tong tippie toets". Sounds like the S.A. quantity system. If you need between 4 and 10 you ask for a couple!:D
