Gerald they still charge per sq meter price on the 3.6 boards wel that is in my town and that is sometimes when there is a supply problem with the std 2750x1830 boards.I must say that it is not verry easy to work with that size it is heavy and space is always an issue.Dave cut your rails down yourself it will be R800 that goes towards some good electrical cable.Ask Johan what happened to him with some of those taxi`s

Lex Tue 22 September 2009 01:18

I hit Taxi head o on Friday. The car is a right off but it look like I will make it. Ankle and chest are a bit damage but it doesn't hurt when I swallow my beer. :)

Alan_c Tue 22 September 2009 02:06

Sorry to hear about your accident, hopefully it wont affect your build completion, very releived to hear your beer drinking is not affected, that would be most traumatic...:D

Lex Tue 22 September 2009 04:20

Thanks Alan. I hope to have everything back on track in a week or two. Transport will be affected, for sure. Pills goes down a lot easier with a Windhoek lager! :)

domino11 Tue 22 September 2009 08:03

Lex,
Hope you are feeling well again soon. Take it easy with a few beer. :)

Lex Tue 22 September 2009 09:29

Will do Heath. I am booked off for this week but I will have to get my son to take me to work next week. They fitted me with one of those 'space boots'. It looks like it was used on Apollo 11. :)

Gerald D Tue 22 September 2009 10:50

Johan, I hope that you caused some decent damage to that taxi!

Get well soon, and hope the insurance company is kind to you.

kooskoek Tue 22 September 2009 15:19

Get well soon, I will swear at one tommorrow if it will make u feel better, s#$# it's gonna make me feel better.

Robert M Thu 24 September 2009 07:02

Hi lex,
I was looking back at your build progress and your method to grind the Z-slide puzzles me ?
May I ask how you manage to get the skate & grinder to hold it the horizontal position shown in the picture on your post #154 ?
I’m in the preparation stage (trying to be a step ahead) of getting to my next step in my build, the steel fabricating part, as my electrical should be over by end of this week end, at leat I hope.
This Z-slide making is getting me a little worried as I’m debating should I do it or getting it done in a machine shop???...$$$...???.
Machine shop will obviously cost me more, but again, maybe it will come out with better tolerances and another positive side I’m liking, is it buy me some time….. I may be missing some time to finish my build at the rate it is going for me since I started….I’m slower than anticipated !
Will see…., but in the mean time, I’m trying to look at other alternatives to make my own Z-slide and yours….well…it’s must be me, but to me it’s mind-bending ??!!
Again, wishing you prompt recovery……;)

Robert M Thu 24 September 2009 07:04

Lex…..???? what the....why Lex  :o
Sorry Johan, only at my 1st morning coffe….

Hallo Robert

Attachment 6304

The photo shows how I have bolted the skate onto the side of the little saw table. I hope it makes it clear to you. The grinding method works very well. My fingers got a bit tired from pushing it against the fence all the time. Grinding sparks hit my forearm but that problem was solved when I put my long sleeve overall jacket on. Also the glazing of the grinding wheel made me change it more often. I use 3 wheels to keep it taking off sufficient metal.
I hope this will help you.
You can call me Lex if you like. No problem. My company's name is 'LEX Projects'. We were 3 partners and to keep one of our big clients happy we called it Lex- short for Alex who was the main contact at that time. :)

Robert M Thu 24 September 2009 13:30

Bonjour Jojan,
Yep, it’s all clear now…comprendé amigo… :)
Thanks a lot for this additional time you took!
All the best to you ;)

domino11 Thu 24 September 2009 14:03

Johan,
Looks like I may have been the instigator in the Lex naming.:o My apologies. :) I should look closer when I reply. I find login names / real names confusing some times. :)

Welcome back Lex! :)

hennie Sun 17 January 2010 07:39

Min dae Johan ,min dae nog so week se werk dan kan jy maar begin sny!:D

Kobus_Joubert Sun 17 January 2010 07:39

I am glad to see you are still alive....quickly finish it off before the February heat..:D

hennie Sun 17 January 2010 07:45

Johan you better start building a 4th-axis also because some peaple tends to rub it in and I like it :D

Kobus_Joubert Sun 17 January 2010 08:02

Some lead...some follow..:D

hennie Sun 17 January 2010 08:44

I will send you some blue paint Kobus:).For those local MM owners who are interrested in doing some of my cutting for my clients in your areas send me a e-mail [email protected]. website is nearly finished and part of our service will be to manufacture items that I have designed and are running as specials on the net, some mula for everybody.(get some of those MM`s that only work during the weekends to produce some income)

Lex Sun 17 January 2010 23:38

I must finish the machine first before I can play around with the 4 th axis Hennie. I must say my wife was impressed with the video that Kobus made.

domino11 Mon 18 January 2010 13:46

Nice progress Johan. Funny to hear you guys talking about February heat, as in Canada we are still in a deep freeze and are hoping for our July heat right about now. :)

Lex Mon 18 January 2010 23:54

Thanks Heath.
Yes, it is amazing to think that one can talk to someone on the far side of the planet. The one overheating and the other one freezing.:D
I must say that the humidity is not so bad this year. But then February is still coming!

I manage to bolt the control box and trucking to the wall on Saturday while the weather was rainy and therefore not so humid.
Also welded the stops on the x-rails yesterday when a small problem raised its head when I try to mount the stops on the y-rails.
I could not get the stop block to pass below the y-car. I used 20 square bar in place of the 15 Sq bar as shown in drwg. 10 10 248. My block height measures 18mm.
I left the problem for tonight because the humidity got to uncomfortable after lunch. I am thinking of grinding the two side back to 15mm in the hope that it will clear.

The 'Zulu' pattern as the first test

Gerald, thank you so much for making it posiable to build this fantastic machine.
Jy is 'n yster!

This project was a great challenge for me. The electrical and the rail grinding worried me the most but turned out to be a lot easier with the help of the forum members and some friends at work.
Funny, the x- axis gave me the most uphill. From the the main beams to lining of the rails to getting the gear racks straight was a battle. It took all my skill and patience.
Time wise it took me long to get going until December 2008 when I realize that I will have to built a room on for the MM. The machine building stopped for 3 months while I was doing that. In 2009 I hit another problem with the motorcar accident when I was forced to stop for another 3 months. After that it went easier.

Attachment 9045

I was so exited after the first cut that I forgot to zero all the axis and it hit the table with a force before I realized what happend.

Alan_c Sat 27 March 2010 18:05

Mooi gedaan Johan - welcome to the club :D

Robert M Sat 27 March 2010 18:41

Great news LEX….. Congratulation.
I’m following just a few steps behind. I’ll join you soon as an “already cutting” club member.
Enjoy your new machine and this exiting week-end !
Amicalement, Robert ;)

KenC Sat 27 March 2010 22:20

Congrats on the completion, Johan! A new number is born!

I am also a few steps behind, can't wait to see some wood dust flying.

Cheers

Gerald D Sat 27 March 2010 23:02

Claudiu Sun 28 March 2010 04:31

Great Job Johan!

hennie Sun 28 March 2010 06:10

Johan you need to start using that MM I see there is rust on the rails

Kobus_Joubert Sun 28 March 2010 06:18

It's blue, is cutting and has a sticker...I think a nice new number is all that is needed

Some number close to your age ?????

MetalHead Sun 28 March 2010 06:58

Congrats !! You get number 56!!!

Lex Sun 28 March 2010 07:52

Thanks for the number Mike.
Yes, Hennie, a thin layer of surface rust is forming on the v-surfaces. I will have to get some orders in.:)
Kobus I was aiming for number 55 which would have been more symbolic for me. I am turning 55 in July - so was born in 1955. But 56 is fine since it is my wife's birth year .
