Ken, take them for a "steamboat" :)

KenC Wed 01 June 2011 04:09

Sure! & Bah Kut Teh.

Gerald D Wed 01 June 2011 06:13

Hennie & Kobus love their red meat - they will enjoy Satays....about 20 each!

hennie Wed 01 June 2011 06:21

It is time to speak our Language please.

KenC Wed 01 June 2011 06:41

Oh, you will know the language once you feast on Malaysian delicacy.
Steamboat
Satay
Bah Kut Teh

Kobus_Joubert Wed 01 June 2011 12:43

I might go for the Steamboat...looks like FOOD.
When we lived in Holland we were introduced to Satay...not enough meat for us red meat lovers.
Definetly not Bah Kut Teh.... I am NOT SICK and don't eat soup.:D

Jan de Ruyter Thu 02 June 2011 00:49

Kobus, as a fellow meat lover, I can recommend Bah Kut Teh, provided it is served in Klang and your host is Ken. Nice stuff.

There is a restaurant in Benoni called Lemon Grass, they serve Malay food, including satay, great stuff!

[QUOTE=Kobus_Joubert;50753. . .
I was very worried that I would also have sporadic movement on my MM when I go the spindle route.
I connected the unit on Saturday and the machine has been running non stop without any problems. I did not add filters, special wiring and earthing to my setup.[/QUOTE]

if i may ask, what wire did you use for your VFD to spindle?

i guess while i'm asking - would you describe how your quick mount plate works

cheers,
robin

Hi Robin,

When I started my MechMate I thought this thing is pulling MAJOR Amp's so I bought a 100m roll of 2.5mm 4 core CABTYRE
Attachment 11898

I used this to my steppers and also to run my router back then.
All I did with the Spindle is to use 3 of the 4 cores from VFD to Spindle.
No earthing NOTHING.

The quick release bracket was in the plans I think. All it is is a small plate with 2 indexing pins and a 8mm threaded hole.
This plate then fit onto your Z-Plate...the 2 pins locate into holes on Z-Plate and one 8mm bolt goes from the back of the Z-plate (rectangular tube) into the mounting plate. All you have to do is to undo the 8mm bolt and the spindle pops free.

See my build log http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...&postcount=162

MetalHead Thu 16 June 2011 05:36

Nice acanthus leaves . Been reading a lot about those in metal work lately.

Kobus_Joubert Thu 16 June 2011 12:34

Oh is that what it is called? Got the STL files FREE with Aspire 2.5 when I bought the program.

MetalHead Thu 16 June 2011 13:40

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthus_(ornament)

This form of leaf motif has been in design for thousands of years. I am reading a book that goes into detail about the different styles and changes this plant leaf has gone through over the years.

Cool stuff really. If history were taught this way more people would be interested for sure !!!

Kobus_Joubert Fri 15 July 2011 06:56

Just did a MAD thing and registered for the 2011 Vectric User Group Meeting in Las Vegas.
Any suggestions on what to do there....I am married...:D

domino11 Fri 15 July 2011 08:25

Kobus,
What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. :)

Alan_c Fri 15 July 2011 11:53

Get married...again...by Elvis :D

Kobus_Joubert Fri 15 July 2011 12:12

I will have to get married to Elvis as I plan to go alone.

Maybe I can get a SA buddy to go with.

That worries me Heath....I hope EVERYTHING stay's in Vegas.

hennie Fri 15 July 2011 12:56

what did you do to get your wife to let you go alone:confused:

domino11 Fri 15 July 2011 13:03

Kobus,
You should get her to come with you. There is lots for her to do during the day while you are at the User Group meeting. :)

Just don't fly Delta: Don't Expect Luggage To Arrive!

Had a great time there, visit the Hoover dam. Ripley's was cool. Trip to the Grand Canyon by plane. Downtown Vegas at night for the show. Stratosphere rollercoaster, Atomic Test Centre museum, Bellagio fountain at night. Eat at "The Steakhouse". The shows are great.

Don't stay on the strip, rather rent something off the strip and rent a car, will be cheaper, Howard Johnston offers good value accommodation as well. Many shuttles available.

Rather gamble at Carnival City, it's the same.

Kobus_Joubert Sat 16 July 2011 10:47

Thank's Jan...I loverollercoasters.

Where is THE STEAKHOUSE

I don't gamble...might pop in a few coins, but that is about my limit.
I stay about 5 minutes from Carnival City Casino...Last visit about 8 months ago.

The previous picture of the mirror frame was done by cutting on different lines with a 18mm ballnose cutter....Total cutting time 1 hour. Size 1500mm x 560 mm

This one was done with a 2 rail sweep in Aspire, but took 8 hours to finish.

Now HOW does this chair go together ??

Cheval mirror should look something like this.

Alan_c Sat 16 July 2011 12:51

That chair frame has to be split at the bottom with a bandsaw or hand saw, then its just a bit of twisting and cussing to get it together - enjoy :)

ps there needs to be two rebates at the bottom of the seat to take the ends of the two fingers on the sides.

domino11 Sat 16 July 2011 13:08

Hey Kobus,
With all that work coming in, you should be able to surface that old tired spoilboard soon! ;):)
Nicely done! :)

Kobus_Joubert Sun 17 July 2011 00:08

Thank's Alan....I tried to phone you yesterday afternoon but could not get hold of you.
Do you know more or less where to do the pockets on the bottom of the seat or do I have to figure it out after I did some bending and twisting ?

Come on Heath...there is NOTHING wrong with my spoilboard I did replace it just a while ago :D

Sorry, phone was not on and besides I was up on the roof doing repairs most of the day...

Attachment 12100
Use the picture as a reference for locating the pockets at the bottom of the seat.

KenC Sun 17 July 2011 02:17

WOW!!!!! Love that chair!!!
8hr is a long time for the frame , but the result is fabulous.
The flakes are a sigh of perfect feed & speed setting, you bit will stay sharp for a long time to come :)

Jan de Ruyter Sun 17 July 2011 02:52

If you go on the Stratosphere rollercoaster, remember to take clean underpants with. Can't remember where The Steakhouse is, but the food was fantastic. It is a Chicargo style restaurant, as you walk in, there is a wooden refrigerator with your dinner hanging there. (Maybe an expired mobster too!)

Just stay away from chicken: even the chicken breasts are fake in Vegas!

hennie Sun 17 July 2011 06:07

Kobus ,I like what you are making, man it looks nice. You must come to my place then I would finish one for you( stain and sealing of the wood ).Get your son to use 220 grid paper to do first sand then go to 320 or 340 grid.

smreish Sun 17 July 2011 07:42

I haven't done this trick myself, but I did see a CNC shop use a rotary sanding drum (very small diameter run a very slow speed) around the tool path to sand the slots of a hand rail insert. Of course, the slots were about 25mm.

Maybe even second tool path with a different style of cutter bit would help reduce the need for sanding the internal parts of the cut out.

Just thoughts while look at your chair.....

hennie Sun 17 July 2011 08:47

Sean ,when I did the bamboo cut out for the undermount basins I ran a slow speed with a spiral cutter.I got a clean cut and sanding was minimal.I think the best is to finish it by hand.Kobus get some sandpaper and start sanding:)

Kobus_Joubert Sun 17 July 2011 09:13

Thanks for the tips guys.

After a bit of muscle...ratchet strap and 2 x F-clamps it is nearly there. Those front legs are a bastard....you need to get them on the inside before bending the chair.
Just a pity the slots where the front stays must be inserted are not marked.
I would cut them from the top and glue a piece in afterwards.

Ok Hennie you have a deal..as soon as it is together I will drop it at your place...

Attachment 12101

I used Commercial grade Hardwood ply....not much sanding is needed.

KenC Sun 17 July 2011 22:07

What thickness did you use?

Kobus_Joubert Sun 17 July 2011 22:53

22mm... I went to the dealer on Saturday....he had this one piece that looked like they used it for packing....a bit dirty... Normal price R 1250.00
Got it for R650.00. Don't know if this is the going price for Industrial Hardwood 22mm ply, but it is a lot better than the 19mm shutterply I used before.

KenC Mon 18 July 2011 00:22

I love to Fleishman designs, but I've not cut any just yet. All I did was some seating board using similar dimensions on 12mm shuttle ply & they cracked off during some torture test...
Call me paranoid but I need to be sure no one get hurt using the chairs....:p
Marine ply are expensive here & I don't trust shuttle ply. Can't find anything plywood in between... I'm considering laminate some 18mm my own with 6pieces of 3mm veneered ply with PVA white glue (when I find time)。 Any comment on that?

Kobus_Joubert Mon 18 July 2011 00:26

Should work if you have a way of clamping the big sheet all over to get a good bond.

KenC Mon 18 July 2011 00:48

I intend to use water barrel, used tires & sand bag as weight. :)
BTW, talking about finishing, I planned to try a "new" method I overheard in my friendly neighbourhood coffee shop. Apply shellac or lacquer before any sanding. this will seal the wood make the loose fibre stand up like tiny mushrooms which makes sanding a breeze.
After sanding, apply PU stain of choice.
Anyone tried this yet? Does it really save time?
