Well done! I like your "hands on" dust collector - it is the same one I use:D

Look forward to seeing your number and name on the list.

TY all :P

I made a temp one today instead of hands on, works pretty ok :)

Soon my number will be mine!

AuS MaDDoG Sat 10 April 2010 18:47

Nice machine!! Nice Vidieo's and congrats on getting your number soon.

Cheers
Tony.

Gerald D Sun 11 April 2010 00:24

Well done Marcus! I read your thread again this morning and remembered that you had built your own CNC machine before. It will be interesting to hear your opinions on ballscrew versus rack & pinion, and any other things that you noticed so far.

oddname Sun 11 April 2010 04:39

Well this machine is way faster than my previous so, so far rack and pinions are the bomb. Not really much to complain about, a bit louder due to some cheap chinese rack and pinion (played with some other locally which were alot quieter and smoother) but they cost most more, but I can live with some noise when it works this great :)

Im pretty impressed with both the machine and the results it produces "out of the box" havent really had to adjust much, perfect flat cuts, no difference at all from each cut.

domino11 Sun 11 April 2010 12:39

Have you tried any grease on the racks to see if the noise is lessened?
Nice job on the machine!

oddname Sun 11 April 2010 12:50

I was going to do that but forgot to get grease :)

A small test run made of some damaged MDF
http://pici.se/thumbs/t_KOpKehkow.gif

Made a mistake with Z when running the finishing (separate code) so it messed up a little but all in all, it got potential.

jehayes Mon 12 April 2010 08:59

I would think twice about grease on the racks (dust collectors)

oddname Mon 12 April 2010 09:09

If there is enough dust collection that shouldnt be a problem, or if your not milling super dusty stuff like MDF.

Another Q, anyone using EMC2 and controlling their spindle via RS485 and MODBUS RTU?

riesvantwisk Mon 12 April 2010 09:25

Joe, the racks Frallan is using (and I) are not top notch quality and I noticed they are a bit 'sticky', a pinion doesn't run smooth over at.

Frallan, what I did is I got a bit of liquid 'sand paper', the liquid is used to sand pistons for cars and I put it on my rack and run the machine over it some time. This will 'sand' the rack/pinion to make it run more smooth. This way it made my pinion feel less 'sticky'. When I am going to get my belt reduction I will get 32tooth pinions, i think they are better, 22 is a bit to small I am afraid (or just bad quality racks, but for the price.......).

After cleaning I put a little bit of oil on the rack to make it run more smooth. After it I have been doing a MDF job without just collection (Hatchoe.......) and the racks looked just fine after it.

About spindle control, I think somebody wrote that and I have seen it on the EMC2 forum/IRC channel or mailing list. Google is your friend!

KenC Mon 12 April 2010 10:06

Ries, that is good info, thanks for sharing, I think we share the same supplier...

oddname Wed 14 April 2010 15:02

Bah logos taking longer time than expected =(
Guess Ill have to mark the machine in some other way until then

riesvantwisk Wed 14 April 2010 16:27

Frallan,

I printed the outline on a A4 sticker and then cut them out by hand. Took me less then a hour on the kitchen table to get it done. May be not as beautiful as printed, but at least it works. You cab also buy some cutting knives and mount it on the MM ;)

cvriv.charles Thu 15 April 2010 01:48

Geeez! Is this video realtime!?!?! http://www.vimeo.com/10774348 What size bit was being used? Also in the dry run and figure 8 video,... what was all the grinding noise? Other than that I cant get over how cool these things sound when operated:) After I build my MechMate Im goin to build a MechWarrior:)

oddname Sat 17 April 2010 15:48

its realtime, 3mm tool.
The grinding noise is due to the rack and pinion not being top notch :)
But after running some time now they sound less and less, so its just a matter of "running in".

cvriv.charles Sat 17 April 2010 22:03

Wow, thats awesome. I didnt think the machine could cut that fast with a bit that small.

oddname Mon 19 April 2010 15:24

Seems ill be getting my precious stickers tomorrow and that means a nice number!

Did some milling today which resulted in this:
http://pici.se/thumbs/t_ppOKrFhVV.gif
Some flaws due to the fact that I dont have proper means for attaching work pieces yet, but its coming :)

cvriv.charles Mon 19 April 2010 18:46

HEy I read through this log and didnt see what steppers your using or is your using reduction either. Can you share? Thanks.

oddname Tue 20 April 2010 09:44

May I have a number please sir? :P

http://pici.se/thumbs/t_eIIbbpZAf.gif
1 on each side

http://pici.se/thumbs/t_RCQCNyCUp.gif
And 1 on each side here too, but mirrored and on the left side compared to each other.

Gerald D Tue 20 April 2010 12:26

Yup, you most certainly should be getting a number. Well done!

domino11 Tue 20 April 2010 12:34

Congrats Frallan!

oddname Tue 20 April 2010 13:36

Thanks :)

Finally got to it to make a new dust shoe for the proper dust collector.
http://pici.se/thumbs/t_fUoiGsVwd.gif
A picture with some of the parts, MDF and rubber

http://pici.se/thumbs/t_uqwqRzcyr.gif
And a little mockup on how its supposed to be kind of.

Its a static version that you adjust to the workpiece, will be making a similar later that adjust after Z.

MetalHead Tue 20 April 2010 22:47

Congrats !!! I was out of pocket for a day or two and I seem to have missed a lot :D . Now to get the builders log updated....

oddname Wed 21 April 2010 04:08

Ahh ty :)
Numero 57, need to make a nice little plate to attach to the machine now :P

riesvantwisk Wed 21 April 2010 06:24

Congratulations dude!

Well done

jhiggins7 Wed 21 April 2010 06:45

Builder's Log Update

Frallan,

Congratulations on completing your MechMate and Serial #57.

Here is the updated Builder's Log.

Please provide the dimensions of your MechMate for the Builder's Log...either a Reply in this thread or a PM to me will work.

Also, please review your Builder's Log entry and provide any changes you want to make.

oddname Wed 21 April 2010 07:18

The size is 2750x1630, due to the fact I wanted to be able to get it inside too :)

Not really much to add, will be adding proper dust collection and some nice way of fastening for work pieces.

jhiggins7 Wed 21 April 2010 16:49

Thanks.

Updated Builder's Log is here.

oddname Thu 22 April 2010 05:08

Assembled and mounted the dust shoe and it works really ok, some leakage due to the skirts but I will get brushes instead, but all in all it works really good. Whole lot less of dust left :)

jehayes Thu 22 April 2010 10:21

Frallen #57: Good job! Welcome to the club. Machine looks great and the new dust foot looks really good. Which design did you use?

Joe #53

oddname Thu 22 April 2010 10:23

My own design I assume :P
Might have seen similar but afaik I did it after own ideas.

But its a pretty obvious design and where to mount it :)

Drad98_98 Thu 22 April 2010 19:47

Nicely done Frallan, Enjoy it as much as I do, or should I say as much as we ALL do.
Dave #52

oddname Fri 07 May 2010 12:39

Got tired of fastening the way I used to at first so I finally got my ass up and prepared for proper ways of fastering materials. Will be leveling the table tomorrow and prepare the spoilboard for the new way :)

Meanwhile I got a nice "pendant" working via EMC2s' hal.
Cheap and works very well

http://vimeo.com/11559249

Gerald D Fri 07 May 2010 19:39

That link says: "Sorry, "EMC2 gamepad pendant" was deleted at 6:00:34 Fri May 7, 2010. We have no more information about it on our mainframe or elsewhere"

Regnar Fri 07 May 2010 20:58

Try this Gerald http://vimeo.com/11555627

Gerald D Sat 08 May 2010 00:20

Nice clear video! Thanks

oddname Sat 08 May 2010 03:19

Yeah for some reason 2 uploads said failed, but suddenly worked so I removed them not thinking about this link =)
