Your project looks great

Hi Vishu,
Your project looks fine. It challenge your ability.
I like your spindle motor. Could you advise me what website can I order this spindle motor ?

Hi Ton,

Thanks for the comments, Wait for a couple of weeks so i can exactly post enough feedback of the spindle. Irfan & me wanted to try a low cost asian spindle due to budget constraints, hope it will do fine. Planning to start a new thread at the earliest. I have started to grind the X rails and its almost complete and my kitchen table project is 50% done. I am in a hurry to finish i have fell back from my schedule by a month due to sickness Love to see my Mechmate rolling............ :)

Nikonauts Sun 11 January 2009 10:26

that table looks like it needs a good amount of loving/sanding.

vishnu Mon 12 January 2009 10:54

Hi Nik,

Thats the colour of the primer commonly available at our city, its bit dull red so thats looks like rust to you.

Gerald D Mon 12 January 2009 11:00

I think that is the classic "red lead" primer that is still the best performing, but the word "lead" makes people scared today.

Alan_c Mon 12 January 2009 12:11

Also known as Red Oxide (less scary??)

Gerald D Mon 12 January 2009 12:35

Not quite the same. Red lead has lead tetroxide, while today's red oxide paint has no lead content. Red oxide can be a water based paint, red lead repelled water. Or something like that . . . .

Help me in wiring these Motors

2 Attachment(s)
My steppers are of Model 86HS4802 8 wire motors. Please help me out which would be the best way of wiring these to my Gecko 203 drives. My toroids are rated at 1050 VA 39V @ 27A. The specs are given below.

Gerald D Fri 23 January 2009 02:54

If you rectify the transformer's 39V AC, you will get 55V DC

The motor coil inductance is 3.2mH. The Mariss formula says you can go to 57V DC for half-coil. So you have a good match for half-coil.

Insulate each of the blue, black, brown and green wires.

Connect:
red - terminal 3 on gecko
yellow - terminal 4 on gecko
white - terminal 5 on gecko
orange - terminal 6 on gecko

Put a 120k resistor (1/4-watt minimum) across the geckos terminals 11 & 12 to limit motor current to 5 Amps

Lex Fri 23 January 2009 03:08

Hi Gerald,
I am about to connect my motors i.a.w. the bi-polar sketch on the right. Yel-Blu & red-Grn. The way that you advice Vishnu look to be bi-polar as well. Why do the manufacture give us two bi-polar options here? Will your option be the better one?
Wonder which way Kobus did his?

Gerald D Fri 23 January 2009 07:06

Johan, has your motor got 8 wires or 4 wires? that decides the left or right diagram.

Motors Moving

3 Attachment(s)
Hi Folks,

Finally today my buddy Irfan came down to my place and we powered up my control panel and finally had the motor turning. The motors from Deitech are really good & powerful. I have completed welding the gantry & Y car last week and started working on the Z axis.

Here is the video of my motors turning.

Gerald D Sun 25 January 2009 11:28

Well done Vishnu & Irfan!

Nikonauts Sun 25 January 2009 22:58

wow, that is one big controller box.

now that the table is ready, motors turning, it must feel very itchy not to get them done, aite?

syabas inspektor sahab, syabas!

javeria Mon 26 January 2009 05:39

Things vishnu did not talk about -

1. I got to know the reason behind Vishnu getting Dengue fever - a swarm of mosquitoes which feel free to enter and entertain people in and around vishnu's workshop. :)

2. Two connectors placed metal facing each other (live and neutral) almost burnt some wires - but since it was before the contactor much damage was averted.

3. Thin wires on the parallel port cables giving us the creeps.

4. Creating a new profile not working with Mach, had to use the regular Mach Mill profile to get the motors moving - may be we are missing something here.

Overall a fruitful visit - he vishnu dude thanks for the great Lunch - hope you overcome all your problems and wrok thru to get our Mecmates rocking fast.

I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel :)

Hi,

Its been a week since the completion of "Kitchen table Project", this week i have completed the welding the Gantry, Y Car & cable track supports. I will have the gear box plates machined by tommorow will be spending to finsh and nount the motors. The problem with the V wheels i have started to make new ones since the previous wheels had only 70 deg instead of 90 deg. Will post pics tommorow. I am rushing up this week so i have the Beast running by next week end.

hey dude where is the video of the gantry moving man - its not official unless we watch it :)

:p

vishnu Mon 16 March 2009 12:21

Hi,

I have almost got off track for the last couple of months due to the orders received for machining and also had some spare time for the mechmate. So guys here is the update on the build.

1. Completed all of the base frame, Gantry.
2. partially completed 1'st cost of paint.
3. Getting ready with the gear box.
4. Z - axis to be completed by week end.

Sorry guys no pics of my machine as my camera is out of order on my mobile, i will have to carry the camera tommorow to post some pics. I plan to complete and have a trial run by this week end. Irfan is grinding the rails & once i complete the gearbox i am sending him so he will get things moving. Hope we both start running the machine in a weeks time.

prakash_sf Thu 19 March 2009 23:12

Hello all -

Firstly, Gerald, this is an amazing creation and a huge body of knowledge that people have shared. Congrats and look forward to adding myself to this tribe!

Irfan, Vishnu - I am based in Bangalore and toying with idea of a set up myself. Can i connect with you guys to increase my rather superficial knowledge of how to go about it. Please let me know how I can link up.

Many thanks and congrats on the progress!

Prakash

Hi Guys,

Here is my latest update. I am currently working with the Z axis which would be completed on Monday. Thanks to Irfan for the nice Gear box design which i cut for Him & me. The machine is coated half way with 1'st coat of paint. Hope to complete everything by next week end.

javeria Sat 21 March 2009 11:46

OK OK - after all the waiting - U turn up with just 2 pics -

:D - man where are the rest of the Pics - no gear box in detail? what about the belt - I thought u had it already.

vishnu Sat 21 March 2009 11:49

Hi Irfan,

I had a low battery on my Camera so could manage only a couple of pics. I would post the detail pics later. Just keeping you guys upated.

YRD Wed 25 March 2009 19:31

Vishnu,

Turn the motor 180º to get the cables down ;)

Gerald D Thu 26 March 2009 03:54

Well-spotted Yuri! You don't want the motors to breathe in a pool of dust as the temperature changes. Also cover the open back bearing of the motor with a decal or something.

javeria Thu 26 March 2009 06:30

HI Folks - just had a phone call with Vishnu - he's fixed all the gear boxes yesterday and wanted to start powering up today - Since he already has his cable tracks - I asked him to fix those up first before cutting any cable.

Probably this weekend we will have movement on Vishnu's table -

Congratulations!

Jayson Sat 28 March 2009 04:29

Well done.

Rad Racer Sat 28 March 2009 07:21

Nicely done! Good video....fun to watch your machine move.

vishnu Sat 28 March 2009 12:27

Thanks Guys, today i mounted the Z axis, but it wouldnt move. I have checked the motor on other axis and it worked fine. I have to recheck the Z wiring tommorow & get them all moving. Is there any other setting i have to do on Mach pls suggest.

gmessler Sat 28 March 2009 16:42

Congratulations Vishnu,

Great seeing another "classic" design in action.:)

domino11 Sat 28 March 2009 20:34

Congratulations Vishnu! :)
Cant wait to see your first cuts.

vishnu Sun 29 March 2009 11:40

I have found the problem on the Z axis, took me nearly 2 hours to solve. It was due to a flawed wire from the PMDX Step output to the gecko. Swift replacement was made and finally had movement on the Z today. Planning to machine the spindle mounts in a couple of days and start my first cut. I am eager to see the BBB cutting after months for hard work. :)

dsingh82 Mon 30 March 2009 04:05

congrats man. you really inspired me. From last one month i didn't get any time to put my hands on my build. But seeing your sucess, I have to put my more effrots towards my build.

vishnu Mon 30 March 2009 12:21

Thanks Buddy,

Well take your own sweet time, understand what you are doing, certainly you would would feel the success on the first cut. Building a Mechmate has become an Obsession for me. I can really tell you building a MM a junk like me has learnt machine building & automation. Full credit goes to our G'reat mentor & fellow Mechmater's :). I have started working on the Spindle mount today hope to do the first cut before this week end.
