McMaster-Carr carries the 30-tooth, 1.5-inch pitch diameter, for $16.56 each (part number 5172T14). 20-degree pressure angle, 1/2-inch face width.

domino11 Mon 17 November 2008 13:44

People have used the 20 tooth, 30 tooth and 35 tooth pinions, from my memory.

sailfl Mon 17 November 2008 16:55

I bought the Boston Gear pinions through a local supplier for that price.

Gerald D Mon 17 November 2008 22:50

Art, the most popular pinion size would be 30Tooth DP20, PA20, 0.5"Face width, bored/reamed 0.5" two grubscrews 90 degree opposed. Would be a bonus if it can be offered as hardened.

Next popular would be the 20Tooth.

Greg J Tue 18 November 2008 07:20

For what it's worth ....

I'm finding that two grub screws (with loctite) in one hole is working fine.

artf Tue 18 November 2008 08:23

Greg,

The Pinion You List At Mcmaster Is Plain Bore Without Keyway And Set Screws

Art

artf Tue 18 November 2008 08:27

I Think I Need To Add Our Pinions Would Be With Keyway And 2 Set Screws.

20 Tooth - Approx $22.00 Each
25 Tooth - Approx $23.50 Each
30 Tooth - Approx $26.00 Each

Art,
That doesnt sound too bad, how about the paypal or credit card for ordering, Is that a possibility of happening? It would make it a lot easier for us Canadian guys. :)

servant74 Fri 19 December 2008 22:31

Art,

Just a thought, but depending on the orders you tend to get, you might put together a 'MultiMate' SKU that contains the most ordered rack and pinions, and possibly other items, or at least a page that might list suggested SKU numbers for rapid ordering.

Having you on the forums is great in any case!

Selling Pinions

On a previous posting, it was stated that Standard Steel Specialty may begin offering pinions for sale that could be used with the 20 DP racks we currently sell. As it turns out, we have decided against selling the pinions. Of course we will continue to sell the racks.

kanankeban Wed 18 February 2009 19:09

Tim
What about the paypal payment, I live in Mexico, my shipping address is in the states but the best way to pay for me is paypal. If this couldnt be how could I pay for my order?
Regards,

Tim Oravitz Thu 19 February 2009 10:53

Payment explanation

Payment can only be made by sending either a check or money order. We do not accept credit cards or paypal. This is because all other gear rack business is with OEM's or distributors and they all have accounts established. This segment (MechMate) of our business, in terms of percentage, is non existent and consequently makes no sense for us to take on the added expenses associated with the use of credit.

kanankeban Fri 20 February 2009 09:13

Tim,
Paypal is easy...and Im sure all the guys around here out of US will be glad to pay the extra expenses for using paypal, they charge a small comision that we can cover for you, no extra expenses involved for you ;), either way the we have to pay for the transfer or money order. Paypal registration takes just a few minutes and its free :D. .Although, Im sure everybody around here will follow your preferences to get your products...Ill do!
Kindest Regards,
Hector

Pinion Quality

Is their any immediate and compelling reason for me to buy the more expensive euro made $ 38.00 AUD pinions compared to the Chinese $ 8.00 AUD version?

I am not into solving problems that i don't have, but was curious as to what i would be missing out on not selecting the more expensive pinion.

Any advice would be great!:)

KenC Sat 10 July 2010 23:15

You will most likely need to clip off 2~3" of each ends of the AU8 rack which are not really well made.

rotorzoomer Tue 13 July 2010 04:41

Pinions

I will go with the cheaper version unless anybody can comment and add a few more words of wisdon, will see how it goes with the general china pinions.

A good quick article from Moore Gear

LazyMan Wed 04 May 2011 15:25

Anyone order racks from standard steel recently? I was quoted

P/N 200011 3 PCS. @ $38.00 EA.
S/H $50.00
TOTAL $164.00

I guess prices have gone up quite a bit in last four years.

smreish Wed 04 May 2011 17:57

steel prices have tripled since I built my first machine in 2007...that sounds about right for today's inflation.

pinions

LazyMan
If you get the 200011 racks..... Where would get the pinions gears from and which one would you get. What pinion would be good for that rack.
Thanks for the help

KenC Thu 30 June 2011 22:34

McMaster-Carr Part 5172T14 20 Pitch, 20 PA, 1/2" Bore, 30 teeth:)

[email protected] Fri 01 July 2011 21:44

Thanks

timberlinemd Mon 04 July 2011 13:32

Your welcome. One note, if your going to be using a 3.6 ratio then get a 20 tooth. I'm using the 7.2 ratio.

[email protected] Mon 04 July 2011 20:58

I am going to be using #23-305-DS8A 425oz-in bipolar rating, 305oz-unipolar rating, 4.2v, 3A, 200 S/R, 3.2mH, Size #23, Dual Shaft, 8 wire stepper motors. Would I want to go with the 3.6 ratio or the 7.2? I am trying to get speed with cutting power. What do you think.

KenC Mon 04 July 2011 22:54

I don't recall anyone using #23 motor for MM.

smreish Tue 05 July 2011 06:19

Frame Size 23 is not recommend for a MM. Nema 34 with 12.7mm/1/2" shaft is preferred.

servant74 Tue 02 August 2011 12:20

Just got a quote from std steel on
P/N 200011 IS $38.00 EA. (73" or so, I requested info on 5 'sticks' and an extra 15.3" piece, but they did not respond in detail.)
S&H $50.00 UPS

This is USA shipping. I requested a quote for TN delivery. And as always, non-credit/paypal payment required before shipping

WTI Mon 06 February 2012 20:56

Mounting Gear Rack

When looking at the gear rack in the Mechmate plans. It looks like it is held in place by 2 screws and 3M tape. Is this correct? Is there any problem with drilling and tapping the gear rack from the back say every 12". If I did this I would have to use V-rail. Or am I just over doing it.

Alan_c Mon 26 August 2013 02:00

Over doing it!, in fact you dont even need the bolts at the ends, the VHB tape WORKS! (and besides do you really want to drill and tap all those holes?)

KenC Mon 26 August 2013 05:34

I would stop anyone from killing their free time drilling & tapping.

darren salyer Mon 26 August 2013 06:58

I only have tape on mine.
I bought it at Autozone.
3M emblem tape.

Rack & pinion…survey !

Hi all !
As I recently posted on my thread, I’m in need to change my rack after all these years ! Back then, I as many others, I bought racks from Standard Steel Specialty.
This time, I want to try another one !!,,,
Any recommendation on some, maybe better ones then SSS ?
I'm considering Moore Gear for a combo of harden racks & gears !

As anyone tried form any another source than SSS ??

Thks in advance ;)

Fox Thu 08 January 2015 10:31

try helical rack and pinions and let us know :D

javeria Sat 10 January 2015 04:24

Helical Racks from YYC taiwan

Robert M Sat 10 January 2015 12:40

Helical Racks....Yes on improvement in smoothness of motion, accuracy and noise reduction, can't debate that !!..
But also, like anything, there's 2 side to a coin....helical rack creates an axial load due to the helix angle of the teeth....
Load/drag....no so desired for our application ( I'm no rack engineer, but.... i'm wiling to learn :D )

My quest is to find some other source for a more "durable" material/product then reg cold roll steel like the one from SSS

javeria Fri 06 February 2015 04:28

Folks, can anyone direct me to an autocad version of the a 1:1 drawing for the 1.5 module rack. I need an exact version so that I can laser cut it on a 6mm mildsteel sheet,

Gerald D Fri 06 February 2015 05:05

Use this

http://metal.duncanamps.com/images/gear_hobbing1.gif

. . . . and draw it yourself. angle = pressure angle. No curvature on side of tooth.
