by the way what do you think about this collection for spindle cooling
XSPC 500 Passive Aluminium Reservoir - Blue http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22695 Koolance Nozzle Pair, G1/4 Swivel Angled [13mm,1/2"]NZL-L13KG http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22695 Koolance Radiator, 2x120mm, Copper Hort. Do not mix any aluminum with you copper/brass radiator loop. It will over time cause the system to corrode!
Trust me on this. I have seen it many times. Dennis Quote:

i here add this link for anyone who do not know even me did know about it http://fourseasonsroofingandsiding.c...#galvanicscale |
In a closed cooling system, were the liquid coolant is closed inside the system, the coolant can be chemically treated so that it does not cause corrosion between copper and aluminium. A mix of these metals is common in engines, and that is why engines have "anti-freeze" in the water. . . . it is also the anti-corrosive chemical.

hi gerald in case of my choice XSPC 500 Passive Aluminium Reservoir - Blue http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=22695
is it okay to use it with an anti-corrosive chemical like these ones http://www.koolance.com/water-coolin...t.php?cPath=58 |
I would not trust those chemicals in my car's engine! :)
|
what's your suggestion ? I appreciate your opinion .:)
|
Unless your Chinese spindle has some aluminum parts in it stay away from that reservoir. Better to use an acrylic one. When it comes to computer water cooling parts I have had some experience.
|
so dennis i have to change to aluminum radiator like this one http://www.performance-pcs.com/catal...ducts_id=25673 and make the whole system goes for aluminum and use your acrylic reservoir's suggestion. okay what about the nozzles they are nickel-plated brass do i still in
jeopardy of corrosion thanks for patience |
hi gerald regarding this thread http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...82&postcount=5 the fittings shown there are brass so will this affect the body of the spindle on the long run
|
If the Chinese spindle does not have aluminum parts don't change anything except the reservoir.

Hi Myousry.
I have used this reservoir in my setup. http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...gio-k/Fin2.jpg I was also concerned about the aluminum fins in the reservoir tank but i did some research about metal corrosion and as Gerald stated above the mix of aluminum and copper is very common in engines. The key factor is the liqiud coolant which must have anti-corrosive chemicals in it. It's better to stay out of computer liquid coolants as they don't seem to meet this requirements. My friend is an enginneer and what he reassured me was that the corrosion factor in a cooling system it's NOT the mix of metals but the liquid. Typical straight ethylene glycol antifreeze doesn't react well with the materials in your cooling system and can eat away at the metal, rubber, and plastic components. Hope i've helped you. Sergio |
I would use the same stuff that is needed for the modern car engine. Look in the instruction book for your car.

I think you guys are talking about galvanic corrosion, wiki
The corrossion will accelerate if there are stray cureent flowing withing the system, the boat guys will know this better then I do. The root solution is to use a zinc sacrificial anode (ensure it is electrical direct contact with the bare material of the cooler) , all other part that are in contact with the coolant (electrolyte) will last from galvanic corrosion for years to come. With or without the anode, it is always beneficial to use auto anti-freeze... neat or diluted... |
Ken
You are correct. We use zinc in the boats to prevent from galvanic corrosion BUT only because salt water doesn't have any anti-corrosive chems. Galvanic corrosion results when two dissimilar metals, like aluminum and stainless steel, in close proximity to each other are immersed in water with enough impurities to act as an electrolyte. When this occurs, one of the metals acts like the cathode on a battery and remains intact while the other acts like the battery's anode and corrodes In a closed cooling circuit with no oxygenation and a correct antifreeze dilution the corrosion is almost zero. |
Sergio, I guess your boat has MTU engines? When I was in the navy, responsible for some MTU's, their specification was for special oil to be mixed with the coolant water (1.5% oil). Today they have an on-line document that describes these things.
I would only use zinc blocks if I could not treat the liquid. |
Back Again after dry dock works in the boat which kept me busy.
@Gerald. No Gerald we have M.A.N engines but the principles stay the same and we too use a special oil mixture in our coolant water. It couldn't be more coincidence than that so i'm posting some photos of the boat's keel while at dry dock operations. Here is a picture while the boat is being lifted. You can see the algae & mussels built up on boat's keel. http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...-k/BoatUp1.jpg And during the travel to our drydock place. http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...-k/BoatUp2.jpg Note the corrosion in the propeller's Zinc and in the aft's zinc plates just above the flaps and the aft thruster. In this boat we have also an active anti corrosion system (Impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) which use anodes connected to a DC power source in the thruster area. http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...-k/PropBfr.jpg http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...o-k/AftBfr.jpg Polishing the props http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y.../BoatGrind.jpg All boat primered http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y.../BoatPrimr.jpg And finally new antifouling paint and new zinc. http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y...k/AftAfter.jpg http://i802.photobucket.com/albums/y.../PropAfter.jpg |
That sure is a nice boat Sergio!

Great work! I'm sure it will preform better too! :)

Myousry, thanks for your detailed parts list, I used it to learn whats needed for the ensto breakers, I think you missed:
ENSTO Rotary Load Break Disconnect Switch, Door Mount Kit / $9.00 / http://www.factorymation.com/s.nl/it.A/id.5831/.f it goes on the backside of the control box door. Check this datasheet for complete aasembly: http://factorymation.info/Disconnects/ensto_ksrd3.pdf Im looking for a similar part available in the local market, but if I fail I'll go with ensto. |
thanks pablo i will add them to my list although i made changes to my list thanks again

i got my heatsink and my toroidal transformer but for the stepper motors, we got our money back as oriental motors didn't send them to us. i don't know why:confused:
and now we have to buy chinese stepper |
Looks like another damaged part... Is this typical for Egypt? Still, I don't think it would be too difficult to fix.

NEED HELP for overvoltage monitoring relay
2 Attachment(s)
hi guys,
i bought this voltage monitoring relay as there is an over voltage situation in egypt happens i.e you may find a 380V in a 220V power line because of a stupid electrical engineer :(. the link for relay http://www.hiquel.com/en/machine-aut...e-control.html i have changed the 35amps contactor with a 50 amps. i going to let the relay to control the coil of the replaced contactor in case of an overvoltage or undervoltage case took place. the problem that i face is that the coil of the relay needs to have an isolated AC 220V power source . i intend to buy a UPS for the PC that will run the machine and to power the coil of the relay. can any UPS take the 380V without being barbecued ??? thanks a lot |
Are you certain about the Engineering? Are the power lines overhead as many in the US are? Could the problem be from Voltage spikes?
A voltage spike is defined as fast short duration electrical transients in voltage. All electronic and electrical devices are designed to operate within a certain voltage power supply, which is normally written on the product sheet/manual or on the device itself. Voltage spikes can damage these devices. One of the more common types of damage that can be seen is when a bulb is given a supply of power higher than its voltage rate, causing a burn out of its wire or even causing it to burst into flames if there is an over-voltage. Voltage spikes can happen through natural causes, such as lightning strikes, solar wind and solar flares. A surge in supply within power, phone and signal lines can affect equipment over large areas. A storm that is occurring miles away can induce high voltage spikes in another location. Lightning doesn’t just cause surges when it strikes, lightning between storm clouds can also create magnetic fields that induce surges. Man-made over-voltage is caused by electromagnetic induction when switching on or off inductive loads (like electric motors or electromagnets). Power outages, tripped circuit breakers, short circuits Electromagnetic Pulses (EMP) with its energy distributed up to 100 kHz in 1 MHz frequency range and inductive spikes. Surges in the power lines can also be generated at the switching station of a local power company. It can also be generated by electrical machinery, appliances and power company operating equipment. Common household equipment can generate 1,000 Volt spikes. |
thanks a lot john for your clarification . do you know any UPS that can take the 380V overvolt in order to proctect the pc ,the monitor ,and the coil of the relay
thanks a lot |
I am sure they are available. But I recommend being certain where the problem is coming from. Why spend more money than is needed? You may only need a simple surge protection device...
I lived in Florida where storms affected line voltages. An UPS was absolutely necessary because the power lines are mostly overhead and lightning strikes are common. Often the power would be off for an hour or more. But the UPS would give me time to shut down the computer systems until the lights came on again. But for other equipment, this would not be very cost effective... IMO That's why I had asked you about your local environment. Dry air is more susceptible to static electricity for example. Here in Germany, winter air is dry and we need to be careful of static discharge. Most of our power lines are underground so no trouble with lightning. I have not seen a power outage as long as I have been here... |
One note on the statics, In my location, I've never encountered static build up (EVER!!!!) until I have my dust collector...
