Still selling Teflon washers James?

JamesJ Wed 23 April 2014 20:34

Yes I do.! PM on the way.

JamesJ Thu 24 April 2014 17:48

Folks
I just got shocked by the huge price increase for Teflon rod. Rod has more than quadrupled in price and there is no way I can make and sell washers at a reasonable price. I am going to do some research to see if I can locate a lower cost material. If I can I will update this thread. Sorry for the bad news...

Jim

I have a partial sheet of Kydex on the shelf I am planning to use for washers for machine #2....We'll see how that works.

Most shoe repair shops should be able to order teflon slider sheets for the soles for curling shoes. you can cut the washers out of these.

What about a Crazy Carpet? :)

Tom Ayres Thu 08 May 2014 09:50

What is a 'crazy carpet'?

domino11 Thu 08 May 2014 09:55

Crazy Carpet

Kids up here use them to slide down snow covered hills. Very slick plastic sheets.
:)

JamesJ Thu 08 May 2014 15:28

Thanks for the head's up, I'll check this out.

jask Thu 08 May 2014 15:33

Crazy carpets are normally HDPE high density polyethylene while teflon is TPFE the two are not the same and the mechanical properties of the teflon are superior in this application.

domino11 Thu 08 May 2014 21:28

Gerald had mentioned that any slippery plastic material could be used. We are not creating a lot of movement at this joint on the machine. Try it and see! :)

jask Thu 08 May 2014 22:10

the HDPE materials are much more notch sensitive than PTFE... what this means is that a little nick can turn into a crack that spreads to the center and in the case of HDPE it can allow the wings to spread and continue to crack on the other side of the center hole until it splits in two. Teflon will not do this.

Anything slippery & stiff will do. Delrin, POM, Teflon, nylon... etc etc etc.

For what it's worth.... I'm using UHMW for the past....4+yr, still as good as new ;)

JamesJ Sat 10 May 2014 08:19

I have ordered quantities of UMHW as it comes close to the qualities of Teflon but is not quite as slippery and cannot take nearly as much heat. In the mechmate application UHMW's heat profile gives me the most concern. I will make some washers and try them.

Robert M Sat 10 May 2014 09:54

No heat ( direct [friction] or indirect [environment] ) is a concern about this specific application here.
I've unmounted a number of time my tranys, therefore had chances to see if any wear & tear.....and...None.
As for slip"ness".....there maybe some difference (in theory from data sheet) may be interesting to evaluate, but what is the bottom..... "practical" line...for our usage ??

Amicalement, ;)

JamesJ Sat 10 May 2014 10:17

Robert, I tend to agree with you and sometimes I dive too deep in the specs :)
