Angename kennis!

smreish Tue 20 January 2009 12:01

Happy days! Congratulations on another year.

sailfl Tue 20 January 2009 13:36

Happy New Year to all.

I watched from Jury Duty our 44th President get sworn in and I am a very proud American. I hope he has a influence for change for our country and the world.

Hennie, you are a fortunate man. She is a lovely woman. You are a nice looking couple.

YRD Tue 20 January 2009 14:21

Nils,
The world expects better times with Obama. Congratulations.

Hernie,
Nils is completely correct.

Lex Tue 20 January 2009 22:12

Baie geluk Hennie en Caroline! Ten minste raak dit beter elke jaar aan die vrou se kant!:D Die man bly maar net 'confused'.

jhiggins7 Wed 21 January 2009 07:00

I want to add my congratulations to all those celebrating wedding anniversaries. And especially to Hennie, "Thanks for sharing a photo of you and your wife." This forum is already very special and sharing YOUR personal family with the Forum Family just makes it even more special.

Now to add to the fun. Each time I see some Afrikaans language on the Forum that I can't figure out by looking at the context, I try AGAIN to find a translator. I'm afraid I'm limited to a SINGLE language.

So, I found a "FREE" translator and translated Johan's congratulations to Hennie. Here's what I got.

very luck hennie and caroline! at least get/touch it better every years at the womans side ! the man stay/glad but just 'confused'. ...

Now, I know "free" translators are notoriously literal and not sensitive to the context. So, given the context, my augmented translation of Johan's message is this:

Good luck Hennie and Caroline! At least it gets better with the years at the woman's side. The man is happy, but also "confused".:D

Am I anywhere close? Can you suggest a GOOD "free" Afrikaans to English and English to Afrikaans translator?

Regards,
John

hennie Wed 21 January 2009 08:01

I still need to put up my hand if I want to say something.:D

jhiggins7 Wed 21 January 2009 11:50

The colloquialism around here for that is, "I can't get a word in edge-wise."

Lex Wed 21 January 2009 21:52

John,
Your translation program is not to far out. The 'happy' in the man's sentence doesn't exist. :D I will make a point from now on to put the English in brackets. It is a lot easier than any translation program.
Hennie, verskooning aan die vrou, ek het haar naam verkeerd. My vrou is Caroline. (Apology to your wife. I had her name wrong. My wife's name is Caroline)

Gerald D Wed 21 January 2009 22:40

The "bly" could have been "happy" (but not in that context)

Ek is bly - I am happy.

hennie Thu 22 January 2009 01:14

Johan, sometimes Maraai is good as well.:D

The first thing that struck me when opening your post was the brand new schoolboy in front :)

sailfl Sat 24 January 2009 06:43

Alan,

You have a lovely family. Those boys look well behaved but I bet they are a handfull.

Gerald D Sat 24 January 2009 07:50

Nils, you should learn the difference between boy shoes and girl shoes. Or even between boy names and girl names. ;)

hennie Sat 24 January 2009 07:51

Conratulations on 16 years.

Alan_c Sat 24 January 2009 09:41
