Baie baie mooi, one of kind... I like that

Gerald D Thu 03 May 2012 00:55

Doesn't it fall over easily to the right hand side?

hennie Thu 03 May 2012 10:34

No, Gerald it is stable but the floor is not level.I will however change the design a little for the next one.I did make slots for the legs into the table top so that basically keeps the table together.

Kobus_Joubert Mon 07 May 2012 14:08

Nice, I was out of circulation for a week and only now catching up with all the news on the forum.

hennie Mon 07 May 2012 14:35

Ja, been visiting all over the country.Show some pic`s

Kobus_Joubert Tue 08 May 2012 02:04

Will post a picture of your wife :D
Pictures are all on Facebook. 4000 km in a week around South Africa

hennie Tue 08 May 2012 02:28

Ja, you can`t come and get a broom but you can stop and visit my wife in plett

hennie Tue 08 May 2012 02:29

I am not on your Fleisbook friend list.

My new z-slide

4 Attachment(s)
I decided to build a new z-slide for my MM and this is the results.I basically used what I had.The parts were made by the old z-slide before it got a new home.I will put pic`s of the unit fitted tomorrow. It slides like a dream and the gas shock works good.

domino11 Wed 22 August 2012 12:23

Hennie,
So why the change in design? Looks interesting though.
:)

hennie Wed 22 August 2012 12:48

Heath, because I got board.:) No, just joking I basically designed it for my smaller machine and the thought is that if I can make it a universal design it could work with what I am ding next My lathe but on the lathe it will be horizontal and not vertical as in the MM. I can then use it without the gas shock.

Alan_c Wed 22 August 2012 15:31

Lekker! - how much it costs???

hennie Wed 22 August 2012 22:17

Alan I had the alu plate 12 mm that cost me R 2500.00 about 5 years ago.The bearings and rail was about R3 000.00. I can still make 2 more out of the alu plate that I have left so roughly R 4000.00 incl the rack( off cut ) and bolts.
Because the motor sits in the middle of the slide i made the part that holds the router/spindle only 400 mm long.I can move the whole thing 50 mm higher or lower if I need to. I would like to get it sandblasted before I put it back in the MM but I need to get it working so we know it is not going to happen.:)

Is the motor spring loaded into the rack or is it fixed in place? - if fixed how do you deal with the backlash?

hennie Thu 23 August 2012 06:22

Alan it is fixed but I also thought of that. The rack has a plastic spacer so if by chance it does have any kickback it moves the rack and then I just need to move it back against the Pinion.

MariusL Thu 23 August 2012 07:20

Hennie,
It is not kickback that you should worry about but rather backlash. If you dont have a pre-loaded tension on the rack you cannot hope to operate without backlash.

KenC Thu 23 August 2012 08:22

I tried similar approach with my 1st Z-slide, I learnt that square rails has higher stiction. I have loose step issue due to rail binding when I tension the rack & pinion mesh....

Hence my current ball screw set up.

hennie Thu 23 August 2012 09:59

My approach ,if it works leave it if it doesn`t sort it out.The question that I have is why do we have a gas shock?( my pre-loaded tension)

MariusL Thu 23 August 2012 10:08

No Hennie not pre-loaded tension. It is to take the weight of the Z slide off the motor and to balance the holding torque between up and down. So the Z slide seem to weigh nil.

Pre-loading on the rack is required as it pulls the teeth of the pinion into the rack in order to make a positive mesh and ensure constant contact between the pinion and the rack. Secondly, as the rack does not have very good linear characteristics, it is required to make sure that contact is maintained at a constant pressure all over the area of the rack.

hennie Thu 23 August 2012 10:31

Marius the distance of rack that I use will be about 50mm when I am cutting ( 2 d cutting 95 % of the time and even 3d cutting).Even if we let it go up to the max and down to the max we only cut max 60 mm thick material.

I do see your point and I know what you mean by having constant contact with the Rack to have a perfect positive mesh. Why don`t you come to my w/shop for coffee, and see what I have done.Yes I have looked at the option of even having a spring pulling the rack against the pinion.

MariusL Thu 23 August 2012 10:42

PM me your details and I will make a turn there.

hennie Thu 23 August 2012 12:58

I will sms it just give me a call before you come through

First cut with new z-slide

I am Happy with the first cuts all nice and square.

KenC Fri 24 August 2012 08:47

Sure, backlash in the Z-axis doesn't make any difference in cut quality when doing 2D cutting.

danilom Fri 24 August 2012 17:53

how much backlash can it be. did anyone ever measured the rack backlash?

hennie Fri 24 August 2012 23:03

Noting that can`t be fixed with a bit of sanding.

hennie Thu 04 October 2012 11:12

I got a quote from an engineering firm that manufactures module 1 gears and what not.I didn`t know that a 30 teeth module 1 pinion gear would cost R 318.00 + 14 % vat. And a 180 teeth module 1 gear would cost R 1620 + vat.Dam the effort to go to Nusaf is now worth it .

New lathe

4 Attachment(s)
Ok, What does one do when you get cleaned out. Most of my power tools have received new homes due to affirmative shopping and I am really "de moer in".Even Carolina`s fathers welding machine that I used as mine is still in the Cape walked out of my workshop.I do have suspects so I will follow up this week.
I started my Lathe as I don`t want to have a 4 th axis on my MM.I picked up the steel from the laser cutting company and everything fits.Next will be to build a 4:1 ratio gearbox for the main shaft with belt drive( Y-axis ).I am going to use the same z-slide that I made for my MM but it will be fitted horizontally that way I don`t need to worry about gravity so cutting will be from the side and not from the top and dust extraction is from the top also.

Alan_c Sun 28 October 2012 02:27

Ai! Hennie, ek voel vir jou, die soort snert sal nooit stop solank die volk glo hulle hoef nie te werk vir iets, hulle kan dit net vat - net soos die regering.

Nice progress on the lathe, so I assume this will only be a three axis machine or will you have some sort of cross feed ability? (i.e Y axis movement)

Lex Mon 29 October 2012 00:14

More Hennie,
Jammer om van jou skade te hoor! Hoop die blikslaers word gevang!
I will watch your process keenly on the lathe.
Voorspoed
J.

Gerald D Mon 29 October 2012 00:21

Jislaaik Johan, ons het 'n jaar laas van jou gehoor!

Lex Mon 29 October 2012 03:53

Hi Gerald,
Jammer ek is so skaars.
Miskien so Maart volgende jaar kom sê ek hallo.

My blue machine is still operating well. I still cut mainly in 2d and still having great fun.
I need to modify my dust foot since it is only about 80% effective.
Regards to all the builders!

cnc lathe?

Hi
Is this the start of a new cnc kit to add to the workshop if it works out will be good project to add to our workshops:)

hennie Mon 29 October 2012 06:07

Alan it is a 3 axis.
Hi Johan, how are you doing?
Duckie, Yes so far it is going to be but lets see if I can break it first.length of cut on the x-axis is 1220 mm and max dia of turning provided that the cutters will do what I want it to do is 300 mm with a z-axis travel of 180 mm with cutter.I am going to use 2 x 30 mm linear bearings one bar at the top and one at the bottom. The z-slide is 15 mm linear blocks and rails.I have designed it to take a 2.2 kw watercooled spindle. But for now progress will be slow as I can`t weld because I don`t have a welder thanks to some "pap vreeter!"
I am going to get my family the end of the month as we are relocating back to the big smoke and my welder will be with the furniture truck.

Progress on my Lathe project

1 Attachment(s)
Ok, so it has been a while since I did anything and the budget is not cooperating but I had to do something with what I had in the workshop.I started with my z-slide and gantry for the lathe.I did the gearbox also but I will get the bearings for it this afternoon then I can post a pic of it.

Anybody that say that the Mechmate is not capable of cutting aluminium must think again.I had a client that had an issue with squareness once he had to pay I have news for him.everything fits perfectly.

Axel1966 Fri 08 March 2013 03:27

Hi Hennie,
Did you mesure precisely the cut ?
On mecanical parts, the usual requirement is 0.02mm
