Johan the cutter is homemade, it is a chain saw chain (smallest you can buy), the disc I turned on my metal lathe.

Thanks Heath

Robert and others .... next time I turn something I'll video.

JR,

Here's a link to the Post with the KMZ file that Gerald was kind enough to extract for us from Roadkill 321's original work.

Robert M Tue 16 November 2010 06:12

have purchased 5 9802 motors from Deitech.

BTW JR…. I'm curious :p
Why changing your motors to those new Deitech !?
Robert ;)

Alan,
All mine aren't under one roof! I only get to visit them.

J.R. Hatcher Wed 15 February 2012 19:28

Hello everyone, its been a while since I posted here but I read the forum on average once a week. I need some input from you guys. I'm cutting parts for a small business using 1/8" X 4' X 8' pvc (they supply material). We cut around 10 sheets every few weeks to a month. There are several different stock sheets, each sheet has around 20 pieces. Tell me what you think it's worth per sheet to cut this job. Thanks for the help .... J.R.

smreish Wed 15 February 2012 20:02

JR,
PVC extruded sheet cuts VERY quickly (1/2" pass with 1/4" spiral @ 280-400ipm) - and makes one heck of a mess. Just remember to wear a good filter/respirator mask if your in the little shop.

When I was cutting 3/4" PVC for cooler inserts at the ball field (to separate coke bottles), I charged 50 bucks a sheet to cut it, or 400 for the day if it was a large, repeatable qty.
It takes more time for clean up than it did to cut sometimes. Static cling!

Good luck my friend. Good to see you here.
Sean

Hey JR, was that your annual post to the forum? :) Great to hear you are still active!

J.R. Hatcher Thu 16 February 2012 07:57

This one is the 2nd post this year .... just to prove Gerald wrong :D.
Sean this statement really holds true .... "It takes more time for clean up than it did to cut sometimes. Static cling!"
I have been cutting for this customer 2 years now with no increase in price. I cut 1/8" and 1/2" thick material for $20 per sheet. The customer wants no increase and I want/need $25. Thanks Sean for the input. J.R.

darren salyer Thu 16 February 2012 08:43

Around here a simple sheet cutout starts at $35.00

J.R. Hatcher Thu 16 February 2012 15:59

Thanks Darren, that helps. I need to know I'm being fair and not greedy.:)

Re: control box

Hello Guillermo. I am planning to build another machine. The current control box cools fine by pulling air into the box, this requires the box to be air tight. The new box will cool by pushing air (Gerald's suggestion) into the box so any small holes will just let a little air out, no big deal. The main exit will be an aluminum square tube large enough for all the Gecko drives to mount on the surface creating a perfect heat sink. One end of this tube will be open inside the box, the other will attach to the exterior of the box (maybe the bottom, to prevent dust from getting in when not in use). It will have an exit hole cut to match the inside of the tube. All air will exit through this tube therefore cooling the drives and the interior of the box (the air has to be filtered of course). I also plan to have one or two hinged panels for easy access to all components. I hope this helps ....... J.R.

Is this customer you are cutting the sheets of PVC cutting for them selves or their client. I recently had a discussion with my client and they are planning a price increase to their client in Dec. I told them I could wait but I need to see an increase.

I don't believe a $5 increase is out of order. You are cutting 20 for a $1 a piece. Your gas, electric, bits etc have gone up. $0.25 per piece in not an unreasonable increase.

cbboatworks Mon 11 June 2012 07:15

JR I was paying $31.50 a sheet so $25.00 sounds great

recommend.

I used one computer power supply cooling fan and it works great, everything in the control box is always well within a safe tolerance.

# 2 Will you use again a pool filter for the air inlet
and have you evaluated the use of automotive
filter.

I did think about using the auto filter, but opted to use the pool filter and again it works very good. I don't have a dust problem. Little dust find it's way in via the cracks I mentioned, but the proof is evident by the dust trail around the holes.

Here is a link of what i have in mind.

As a matter of fact ..... it's the customer you suggested I contact a few years back. Thanks again J.R.

I am sad to report that J.R. Hatcher has passed away. He was a friend here as well as on facebook and I was shocked to see posts of his passing today on facebook. I do not have any other info as of yet and when I get more info I will post it here. RIP J.R.

Gerald D Thu 08 November 2012 00:29

That is indeed very sad news. His first wife passed away while he was building his MM in 2007. May the two of them rest in peace together.

Lex Thu 08 November 2012 00:44

I am very sorry to hear that. He will be missed on this forum.
I think he was a very good designer and his rail grinding and dust shoe ideas were used by many.

This is a sad week.
I had a great, productive time working out the methods that we all enjoy in the MM machines we use today evolved from Classic to Mamba with JR personally. He was a great contributor to the MM community. May he and Rose rest in the peace they earned.

My heart goes out to his family during this time.

Peace my friend.

A true inspiration to us all at the very beginning of the Mechmate community! Reading his posts inspired me and made me believe I could really build this Beast. The world has truely lost one of its greatest.

May your family and friends find peace in their hearts in these difficult times. Rest in Peace JR.
