The stone finish looks really nice Kobus. Does the product come in different colours?
My enquiry at the local Mica was answered by a stare! You know, the one that you received when you ask for alien blood!:)

thats a link to the different styles of stone finishes that rustoleum offers. as to find a local supplier... not to sure. if you bought from acehardware (an american supplier it would be 142 dollars shipping! yikes!)

Lex Fri 18 September 2009 03:19

Thanks for the link.

Absolutetly beautyful, this is gonna be a nice mirror.
You are lucky to have friends in far far away.;)

Nice work. When I see such lovely pieces of Artwork, I realize that I have to get my ROBOT up and running. ..............................gotta finish my robot....gotta finish my robot:D

That would also be a suitable present for my wife...;)

Is it possible there is a small misscut in the third pic upper left corner?

Greetings

The vectors are not 100% clean. But Vectric V-Carve Pro V5 has some tools to identify OPEN and DUPLICATE vectors. After a quick clean with these tools I let it cut the file. Some vectors OVERLAP each other and I think that is what you are picking up on the 3rd picture....2 vectors very close to each other, and then the MDF breaks out to for a wide channel....but what the heck nothing in nature is 100 % so this looks handmade and not produced in a factory where every piece looks the same.

This mirror took about one hour to cut with a 90 deg 12mm V-bit
The reccess at the back took about 12 minutes with a 9.5 mm straight cutter to pocket.

domino11 Sat 19 September 2009 16:32

Kobus,
I like them!

sailfl Sat 19 September 2009 17:08

Kobus,

Very nice.

Yea, I have those same vector duplicate problems. I check the drawings very closely before I bring it into Aspire. Extra lines are a pain.

hennie Sun 20 September 2009 01:37

Mooi oom ! You are cutting interresting things the way it looks now is that one of these days you will be cutting diffs for chinese bakkies.:D

Kobus_Joubert Sun 20 September 2009 03:14

Thx for the mechmate tour, and ironing out the process of cad 2 cam. Not being technical at all, Geralds plans makes more sence once one can have a proper look at one, zipping about. Not dissing the plans just my lack of skill reading them properly. Nice feeling seeing one move about, not great, cause it's not mine(Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen with envy).

Also saw the finish of he above mentioned textured spaypaint, great find----Kobus.

Thanks again for your hospitality.

Will be back next weekend with a forklift to come and get my Solid wood chair.:D

Kobus_Joubert Sun 20 September 2009 11:21

No problemo..shout if you need help...not lifting my wooden benches, but on your build.
Thanks for the vectors...I don't think I will need any more in the near future.

Finally managed to finish that mirror I started a while ago. Could not decide on what to put on, so this weekend I was on my way to grab the interior wall paint when my eye caught the tin of waterbased varnish. Well I am glad it did because I think the end result speaks for itself. The deeper parts automatically turned a darker coulour, just what I waned it too be. Thanks again my friend far fa away that got me this artwork.

So magical

domino11 Mon 09 November 2009 10:59

Kobus,
You are right, that finish does the piece justice! Wow.

gixi Tue 10 November 2009 07:05

Nice work !!! For the moment I have to finish some furniture for my self (the BOSS is watching me closely) but soon I'll start some tests with solid wood.
I'm using ArtCam for the moment but my feeling is to go with Vectric who is more user friendly.
I'll give a PM soon as I finish those furniture...

Can anybody identify this collet. From what I could find it something like a 3C or 5C for use on a lathe. I have a couple of them that my late father-in-law left me, but I don't know what the other end looks like where this part fits into and how it grips the small bit I want to put in there. I would like to get a holder that I can fit into my Makita Router that is on old BBB. Thank's

Alan_c Thu 26 November 2009 14:47

Those look like they could be R8's, ususlly used on a small milling machine. If there is an internal thread on the back that is where the draw bar connects, As the draw bar is tightened, the collet pulls into the spindle against a matching taper to lock the tool.

A better option maybe one of those ER11 collet adaptors that have a 1/2" shank that will fit directly into your Makita collet. One of the other guys did mention them, but its too late to remember on which thread...;)

You mean this thing..

Problem is that my Makita only have a 1/4 inch , 6mm and 8 mm chuck.

Are any of the other ER types smaller ?

Today the BOSS asked me when I will make her round table. She got the top from a friend that claimed that it is KIAAT wood. When I piced it up I saw it was Sabie Yellow Wood aka SA Pine. The thing was not flat and I use old BBB to SURFACE it.

Nice Video Kobus! Your wife will be happy with that nice flat table. :)

Claudiu Thu 17 December 2009 10:27

How fast did you go for surfacing?
Claus

Kobus_Joubert Thu 17 December 2009 11:03

Mach Velocity I think is 9000.
Running the 1/2 inch cutter at 200 mm/sec taking off 1 mm every pass

hennie Thu 17 December 2009 21:16

Ok Kobus since you say I don`t show what I make I thought I would put something on your thread .I used the same process as what you did.The nice thing about surface planing the project is that one is only restricted to the size of your table and not to the width of your planer.

MariusL Thu 17 December 2009 21:50

Hennie,
What cutter did you use there?

Regards
Marius

hennie Thu 17 December 2009 23:57

Marius the cutter used to have a bearing on the end so I took it off and ground the little shaft off.It is doing the job though and I use it to surface the table also.

MariusL Fri 18 December 2009 02:29

Hennie, am I right in assuming it was a rabbeting or slot cutter first.

Kobus_Joubert Fri 18 December 2009 03:26

I do the same with those cheap YELLOW cutters. Find they work and work and work

hennie Fri 18 December 2009 05:46

Jip , Marius. Kobus since I discovered that nice shop in Cape town I don`t buy the yellow ones,I needed a quick fix and those were the only one`s I had so they did what I needed them to do.

MariusL Fri 18 December 2009 08:05

Hennie, tell more about the nice shop. We have Leitz tools over here that I discovered recently. They order Onsud cutters if they don't have them stock.

Kobus_Joubert Fri 18 December 2009 11:50

What are their prices like Marius ? Would they have 3mm or smalle ballnose cutters as well ?

Gerald D Fri 18 December 2009 12:45

Made in Pietermaritzburg: http://www.somta.co.za/cat/03m.htm. Suggest you contact them to find out about stock/pricing.

Kobus_Joubert Fri 18 December 2009 21:47

Thanks Gerald, but their range has a 3mm ballnose only with 3mm shank. I did find one with a 3mm ballnose and 6mm shank, but paid R275.00 for it.

Will check with Somta on price on those 3mm shanks and then try your trick with the 6mm round bar with a 3mm hole someday.

hennie Fri 18 December 2009 23:19

Kobus, I had to use dremel cutters this week.I took a old 12 mm 2 flute cutter that hit a g-clamp and drilled a 3.2 mm hole to fit the cutter with a grub screw to tighten it.Made sure that when the grub screw was tightened it was flat with the dia of the cutter so when it is in the collet it can`t come lose. That way the dremmel cutter went into the hole as deep as it can so there is no movement on the 3.2 cutter when it cuts into the material.I am going to Sedgefield today then I will get it from the workshop and post a pic of it.It is one of those boere manier items that work.Marius the shop is Power tool repairs in Cape Town don`t have the number with me now. they do Dimar bits,I got a catalogue of the cutters, saw blades everything that one might use to cut with.

Gerald D Fri 18 December 2009 23:44

Dimar, of Israel, lists Power Tool Repairs as their distributor here:

Kobus, The website is down until 21/12 for maintenance, but look at the catalogs over here http://www.onsrud.com . The guys at Leitz will order for you if they dont have in stock and the pricing is reasonable. Most the tools are solid carbite.

I made a ring from 30mm MDF with a slot cut through on one side to fit my dremmel into the clamp that holds the router. I use this to engrave labels. The dremmel has a very small (2mm) V cutter that I use.

Kobus_Joubert Sat 19 December 2009 03:50

I received a quote from Power Tool Repairs in Cape Town, and I asked them to post it to me and let me know the cost of postage. Everytime I communicate with them they don't add the postage. I get the impression this chap want me to pick up from his shop and don't want to be bothered with making up parcels.

I have used Dremel bits as well, putting the dremel collet into my makita 6mm collet, but when it stresses a bit the dremel collet tends to break....they are very flimsy.
