This is my first work in Artcam. I modified something in the dxf, I deleted the third lay of petals because it was (almost) the same as the second and I thought it wasn't right. I welcome every suggestion or critics :)

hennie Sun 27 June 2010 02:28

Thanks and wow. It is going to be a surprise for my fellow table members. They don`t know that I am making another table as the one that is there at the moment needs replacement.

Robert M Sun 27 June 2010 07:30

Hi Stephane,
Generous of you to share this work !
A few hrs in this !!
Buy the way, witch version of ArtCam you did this ?... With my version-8, I can’t open it as it is written by a later version…maybe 2010 ?
IF so, maybe posting it in a later version would help some other too !
Thanks, Robert ;)

fanefane Sun 27 June 2010 08:32

I worked in Artcam 2008. So Artcam 8 and 2008 aren't compatible...

Robert M Sun 27 June 2010 08:43

ArtCam 2008 = ArtCam 8…. Same !
For some reason, I’m getting this “can’t open it as it is written by a letter date version”….. as I try to open your unzip rar file !
Maybe your build date. What it yours ?

fanefane Sun 27 June 2010 08:57

As i know, the order of the versions is : ... 7,8,9,2008,2009,2010... I read somewhere that Artcam 7 was released in 2004 and I saw Artcam 9 and it seemed older than 2008. Anyway, my build is 348 (SP5)

Dove tail joints

4 Attachment(s)
Ok, I tried this and I am quite impress with the results.I used some shutter ply and 12 mm ply to do joints.

Kobus_Joubert Fri 30 July 2010 13:48

Is this not a half blind puzzle joint. I am sure that a real dovetail is also possible to do this way....just not sure about the inside corner. How will you do it not to have a rounded edge ?

But looking good, just a bit of sanding and its done.

domino11 Fri 30 July 2010 23:31

Hennie,
That looks very nice! Could you let us in on how you did the setup and cut files?

hennie Sat 31 July 2010 00:40

Kobus it sits tight.I don`t think that I would achieve a proper dovetail joint with a dovetail cutter but if you look at the (leigh router joiner jigs) one could let it go as a reasonably strong joint. One thing I know is that if I use it for my drawer boxes it won`t break appart and if I use the right material it will just give that little bit of detail that the competition can`t achieve:)The Little blind piece is the 18 mm shutter ply ,that I had lying around in the workshop.I would post some more samples later in the week with the same material thickness.Funny enough I am thinking there should be a way to do the real dovetail with dovetail cutters .It actually comes down to setting the MM up the same way as a dovetail jig.

Heath, nice to hear from you.I took a dxf.drawing from one of the links that we got on the forum about joints I think it is on the websites that inspire thread and addapted it.
I cut a 200 mm x 50 mm gap through the MM table at x-2400.It is set up like a normal dovetail jig with the one plank lying horizontal and the other one going through the table and sticking out above the table the same hight as the thickness of the plank on top. When I cut it cuts both pieces together and then you just flip it around and do the other end.It still needs some fine tunning but the idea works.I think if I use proper ply or smooth planned planks I would get a better joint.I am waiting for my bamboo to arrive from my supplier then I would cut them out of 15 mm thick bamboo sheets. It is stable and strong enough to give me a good finish.

quality of cut

Ok, I know this is nothing much but I have cut some cutouts for a counter with a under mount basin. The material is bamboo and I like this stuff. The point that I want to make is that the MM cut the corners without leaving any marks I didn`t even sand the insides I just sealed it and bobs your uncle.Cutting speed 20 mm /sec and a 2 mm deep cut pass.I used a spiral down cut bit.

How to move a MM to its new home

3 Attachment(s)
About 5 Months ago I asked my Landlord if he didn`t have a bigger workshop and as my luck had it one of his other workshops were available from the first of October. One morning he got there and the next thing a truck with a crane arrived at my old shop.Wow he even moved all my machines. Here are some pic`s of my new shop and a pic of my MM being moved. As it turned out he is a property developer and for the last two years I didn`t even know it.Must say there are still some good souls in this world.I now have an extra 80 sq meters at the same price then the old shop.Pitty I deleted the pic of the MM on the back of my bakkie it makes your bakkie going uphill if it sits on the back.

MariusL Sun 07 November 2010 10:13

Great to see the progress man. Best of luck in the new place and may you get so much work that it will be too small soon.

Have anyone in S.A. worked with Xanita board ( that paper board that the sign oaks use)

MariusL Wed 02 February 2011 00:49

Hennie,
I did a lot of work with the product as well as some research work with the guys from Xanita.

hennie Wed 02 February 2011 04:08

Marius What is the pro`s and cons and what is the best cutter to use?do you have a contact no for a rep

MariusL Wed 02 February 2011 04:38

Hennie,
It depends on what you want to do with the product. I used a tungsten carbide up-down cutter (very sharp) to ensure that the paper does not rip.

I also used the cores to make my own sheets. I glued two 3mm sheets to the cores to make up a very light 16mm board. I then made cupboards for the caravans from that.

I thought that the product was very good although not durable for heavy use over a long period of time (not for my application at least).

One reason for me not using it in the end was the poor support from Xanita. I suggest that you google them to find a contact. They are in Capetown if I remember correctly.

hennie Wed 02 February 2011 05:48

I am still waiting for my samples from them 1 year later.I saw the stuff at mazeys plastics yesterday in George and saw a use for it.I am going to order some 16 mm sheets and foil them with some of my foil that I have left from previous jobs and use it in the showroom.I might use it for the schools food festival in march.

By the way I need some input and help from everybody.I need to come up with a sweet stall idea.I need to do some marketing for my MM and obvious have a nice design as a display so any input are welcome.I am not that creative at the moment so help a fellow Mech Mater.:)

hennie Wed 09 February 2011 12:19

After 2 years of cutting my gas shock is starting to show some signs of weakness. It was rated at 110 N.I went and bought a shock rated at 270 N that comes from a Golf Rear bootlid as I couldn`t find something else.I fitted it and the Motor jumps from the racks so it is to strong for the motor. Can I ask some of the oaks in the big city`s to give me a tel no of a company that I can contact and get it directly or what did the other SA Mech Maters use and what is the code on the shocks I bought Gabriel shocks maybe I can find a close match.
The other thing is do not put the fat side facing down :o

Kobus_Joubert Wed 09 February 2011 13:02

I bought mine from MIDAS. It is a Gabriel Gaslift and the only number I see on it is 4045-081107

MariusL Wed 09 February 2011 13:54

Hennie,
4045 is the size of the shock. These kind of shocks must be mounted with the fat side upwards. If not, it will loose the gas as in your case. The reason for this is that there is some oil in the unit that is meant to keep the seal lubricated. If you mount it the wrong way round it will become dry and the gas will escape. You can get them from Bosch Diesel Electric as well.

hennie Wed 09 February 2011 23:58

thanks,I bought a 4082

CoRn3 Thu 10 February 2011 02:30

Hennie: post 451, where did you buy the bamboo? Expensive?
Looking very nice....

hennie Thu 10 February 2011 03:32

yes, expensive R2100 ,00 for a 2400x600 sheet.Breaks a screw and you can`t use a nail gun it bends the nails like a fishing hook when you nail it and then shoots it back at you.I will send you the details but make sure if you want to order they know what you want as these oaks send the wrong stuff and they expects you to pay for the shipment back to them

Alan look at this it comes down to using a full sheet with all the other things also attached to it.I basically cut the bracket that forms the basis of the design.I will post a full sheet that have all the stuff on as per my design that I sent you.Ok, Kobus you will get a copy also.

Alan_c Thu 10 February 2011 11:20

this is something that I did for one of my clients,I got the job after some horse trading and no real profit but hey some things in life only some of us can do if you have the Balls as this was a first for me.I covered it with some Burgandy Mahogany foil after some 6 hours of cutting.

MariusL Sat 26 March 2011 05:52

Wow, awesome Hennie. Where do you get your foils from?

KenC Sat 26 March 2011 06:59
