Russell,
It looks like you cut 3/4" MDF - 3 sheets. Nice looking design and that was a good idea to keep the waste tabbed to ship the pieces. |
Danilo, I dont think it was from the cutter as the straight lines area as smooth as a babys bottom. Its hard to explain but I never have problems with straight lines or circles. It only shows its ugly head when I cut curves like in the photo. If I had to guess it is from all the Nodes/Lines of code. I have tried turning on and off constant velocity and although they became smoother the lines like to wonder off the path a little. The photo makes the lines look huge but a quick pass of the sanding mop took care of them.
Nils, it was 1/2 MDF. If it wasnt for the tabs I dont think I would have been able to lift it off the table with out falling apart. |
Russell,
I don't remember which CAM software you are using and I think all the Vectric stuff has the capability but convert you curves to Bezier Curves it will help smooth the curves. |
Did you cut those panels in one pass? I was looking at the pictures and I can't tell.
|
|
Nils, I have Vcarve and I think I told you or someone else here about turning everything into curves. I completely forgot myself though.
Keith, I started out with a single pass. Then the whole mess with the router and thinking I was over straining it. So I went to 2 passes and never went back to change it. I just wanted it cut out before the deadline and didnt want to screw anything up. The top sheet in the large photo is a 2 pass cut. The one below it was a single pass cut. The cutter was a .125 diameter O flute upcut endmill. My cutting speed was 100ipm with the router set for 12,000 rpm I believe. |
Update. The guy was super happy with the way things turned out. He ordered another 10 sheets and is figuring out another method of shipping. He doesnt need them until August and likes the new non-rushed price even better. Here is a pic of how they turned out.

looks great... Did you make the bases for the sheets also?
|
Steve, I didnt make the stands but it looks like they are decorated with the scrap areas I sent for shipping.
|
Maybe thats another part you could make for him :)
|
Absolutely brilliant work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Nice, I like those
:) |
Does anyone have any suggestions where patterns like Rus can be found?
|
Keith you will want to look up Dover designs. It's just one large source. You can also look up scroll saw patterns.
|
Russell,
That looks fantastic. Great job. |
Awesome work Russell, do a Google image search for any plan. Works most of the time.
Cheers Tim |
I was just wondering, are the panels 8ft X 4ft?
|
Keith they are just a little shy 44x80. I don't know why that size.
|
Thanks Russell

My wife is a pastry chef and used to do wedding cakes. I showed this to her and see said "Wow". It is nice to see what others do with the parts that are made on these machines. If your customer does a lot of cakes, you may have a nice repeat customer of different designs or possibly the same one if the display is part of their price.
Even for all the trouble you had with the router, there must be gratification in seeing the end product. |

So cutting this project out was the easy part. Staining and Sealing with Shellac was far more time consuming than anticipated. The little guy loves it because he has some freedom (Mom is not hovering over him) and its helping him pull himself up/ walking around. I knew it was going to be pretty sturdy but I have to say it holds up really good. He will not knock this one over. My 90lb Labador tried and failed miserably.
|
Ok. That is just plain awesome in it's simple perfection. Wish I'd finished my MM before my youngest was already walking. Which was years after my oldest walked straight into my shop at 4 years old and turned on the table saw - blade was down, I was there, but it scared the hell out of both of us - that lovely green button is at eye level.
Enjoy the little fella while he's little - he'll be running your shop in ten short years. |
Russell,
That is a great idea and with lots of room to roam around. |
Russell
That good to see that you made the item that your posted in the Websites that inspire (and get the budget approved!) and I bet a better price that you liked. It looks really good:D Paul |
That is an awesome utilization of the machine for practical purposes.

Russell good to see you are making things. Your little one is getting big! My 15 month young daughter just started walking and now the work starts.
Like your speakers too. I made a set using 2" material weighing 180lbs with drivers installed. |
3-way Bass reflex?
|
Just was linked back to your build log in another forum and thought it was funny that the word is getting spread out there regarding your playpen.
|
James I hope it was all good things. :) by the way the speakers look great dont know why I missed that post before.
|
Nice work. Do you do any of these plaques or signs in foam?
|
Nope, most are in veneered mdf or real wood.
|
Russell,
Nice job on the Anchors. Hope your family and you are doing well. Warm regards, |
Nice work! Good to see things coming out of the MM
Is that a Ron Paulk workbench you have built there? Looks familiar :) |
Nils,
Family is doing great. We are all busy but its been a lot of fun these last few months as the little guy now my little helper when the dust isnt flying. Bruce, It is the Ron Paulk bench and the MM made easy work of building it. I feel bad every time I watch him start to drill holes or make a jig for the lightening holes. and if anyone is wondering what is going on with the air hose there is over 100 feet on there so I can make it to the back yard. Here is a video of the reel in action. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kczsvOHcapE Sorry for the phone video. It is based off this guy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jo84x64rNCU |
Thought it was one of Ron's. I bought his plans with the view to converting them to CNC cut when my MM is up and running. I too cringed at the amount of work Ron did to build his but then again that why we build these monsters, to make our lives easier :)
|
Well just to give you an ideal it took 3 sheets of plywood and about 30 minutes to cut it all out.(Top Only) Im thinking about purchasing his Total Workstation Plans as well. I just need a bigger garage.
For those wonder were or what we are are talking about here is the link. http://stores.modularmarket.com/paul...station-p5.php and http://stores.modularmarket.com/paul...ench-ii-p1.php Youtube videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnNi6Tpp-ac https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-N7R...kTy547iHSs2xUg |
Thats some cool stuff, man. Im digging on the workbench.
|
Russell, are those painted or decals? Doesn't really matter though, they look awesome either way!
|
Look good. I do not know about that table though. I have a hard enough time finding my tools when they are on the top of the table. With that bench I would be losing them under as well! :)
