Looking to change to a new spindle set-up

2 Attachment(s)
Hi yall.... :0) !!
Been lurking on changing my old reliable PC7518 for a VFD-spindle setup !!

Not sure yet as I'm in my few 1st hr of surch & instigation, I would much appreciate getting from some of you guys using the Huanyang spindle setup some info !
A - First, I'm not sure if I should go with water cool or not ( understanding there is a decrees in noise W- the water version)...but, having all equivalent, speed, feed, & cut depth, anyone knows where I may find a YouTube so I can hear & make my call ?!
Attachment 16199

B - I'm also wondering from this bellow photo, should I consider this type of spindle if it's the same KW power as the watercooled version ( 3KW). On the other hand, this version is also available in 4KW !!....all consideration, is the extra 1KW worth on a Mechamte......?!

Attachment 16198

Thanks for any of you sharing your time elapse experience with either these type.
Robert

Difference in noise is considerable , you can find watercooled ones even in 5.5kw version with ER25 , I mounted it od one MM and it really rips trough material. But its with modified Z axis because only the spindle weight 20kg.
Its capable of going trough 30mm MDF in single pass at 10m/min

My personal favorite is 3kw water cooled and I mounted more than 10 of these on different machines

Tom Ayres Mon 22 January 2018 05:29

Hey Robert,

I have the 2.2 kw water cooled setup and I have had absolutely no problems. It has far more power than I thought I would need. I have a small radiator with fan and small water pump directly mounted on the y car that way I wouldn't need a lot of fluids running throughout the system. Overall very happy. If you don't want to worry about coolant the air cooled works fine from what I understand. Tom

5.5 kw in comparison to 3kw

5.5kw with 400mm stroke

Tom Ayres Mon 22 January 2018 05:33

Wow, big difference in size

Robert M Mon 22 January 2018 06:29

5.5hein, .....MY....so SEXY...:p:D
Seriously Donilo, may I ask where you get your 3KW watercools ?!
Thus far, I found 3KW kits from Huanyang !
Do you know if there some....say in between, like kits with W/cooled 4KW ??
Later....

danilom Mon 22 January 2018 08:57

These are the same you find everywhere, never had a problem with any of them or with the supplied VFD

I have not seen 4kw version but that is because I have not looked for it maybe, but consider that after 3kw the VFD input is 3 phase 380V between phases so you must have that in your shop (we have it in every house but I see that in USA its pretty rare)

Robert M Mon 22 January 2018 10:20

Thanks danilom,
I've just started massage comm with Huanyang to see if they offer kits on 3KW and/or 4KW !
will see, but from what I've seen, they have a 4KW !
Even if I have 380 & 600v here, I'm not sure if I sould go over 3KW.....on a mechmate !?
Will see what they have to offer & price diff.....from there, I'll make a choice
Thanks for your assistance.
Later !

danilom Mon 22 January 2018 16:30

As you see I installed 5.5kw on a mechmate and it has been nothing but a joy , but if not needed dont go over 3kw on stock Z axis

Robert M Mon 22 January 2018 16:58

Will consider that...Thanks for your valued info ;)

Robert M Tue 23 January 2018 20:08

Got another question for you danilom !?

There's only a 3kg net weight diff and +/- 100$ between a 3kw and a 4kw !
I'm hesitant but have a bigger, say "feel for" on opting for the 4kw !

A - What's your thought on this ?!
B - what is the piston # you are using on your 5kw setup to counter balance the extra weight ?! ( Are you using a piston?, as the original MM set up ??) I'm curious.....& a tab lazy as I know if I such my notes on how I calculate this but....curiosity ! @_# !
BTW...what's the +/- weight of your 5kw !

Thks, later ;)

danilom Wed 24 January 2018 14:23

Gas spring was calculated at about 50kg , as the steel plate that holds the spindle was 15mm thick steel 450 x 190mm and the spindle with holder is around 20-22kg

this was a specific Z that was asked to be rack and pinion but when the spring died it had no ill effect , you just need a Z motor with a brake , on all other machines I have built with ballscrew Z ( 1610 ballscrew ) you can get away without spring and sometimes without brake

My though on this is to get the largest you can mount and feel , spindles have never been cheaper, also if it has ER20 then its not much sturdier than 2.2kw or 3kw just has more power , if investing in 4kw spindle go for ER25 or ER32 if available

Robert M Wed 24 January 2018 14:39

Thanks Dan ( or Danilo....witch is best to respect ?!)
Much appreciate all these valuable info from your experience !
As far as I can tel, the 4KW offered come with ER20.....but, never huts asking if they can change this !! :D
Later, R

I think the difference in noise is negligile.
Especially as the spindle gets bigger. Cutting noise will be far greater than the cooling fan.

I have some 2.2Kw round air cooled spindles, and they are far quieter than a PC 7518. My dust collector is a lot louder.

Robert M Wed 24 January 2018 18:47

Thks for your input Gerry !
Will contact you soon for UCCNC screen !
Later ;)

danilom Fri 26 January 2018 11:01

I was working nearby two of chinese "HSD" 6kw spindles , and its not a pleasant experience, the fans were mounted on shaft, at 15k RPM its deafening . Original HSD motors with ATC are a different story, with electric fans (noisy but can live with it)

Tom Ayres Fri 26 January 2018 11:14

I will say this, my water cooled unit is whisper quiet (until cutting of coarse)

Robert M Fri 26 January 2018 11:18

Well...it boils down to ....say to each it's own !
A peer near by own CNC w/ 7.5KW fanned spindle W/ACT.....and although he love it so much, I can't see my self with such noise ( spindle that is) !

BTW....I've ask for a price diff ( say a possible upgrade) for a spindle with ER25, and, they can't do it on a 4KW, they offered me a 4.5KW, 120mm body, heavier duty, but at 200$ more........pita !

I'll stick to my option of the regular watercooled 4kw :D

I don't intend to order this soon, but, say with in the next mo !!
I'll keep up info here as I progress in to this.

Cheers... ;)

ger21 Fri 26 January 2018 11:38

Yes, some shaft driven fans can be very loud. But the "fans" (more like small impellers) on my 2.2Kw round spindle are very quiet. But they don't move a lot of air.

Robert M Fri 26 January 2018 11:53

Agree !
Although never heard one ( a 2.2kw fanned in person) I'm certain it must be negligible and very, very tolerable !
Especially, in comparison with my mammoth cry out of a Porter 7518 :D
;)

Tom Ayres Fri 26 January 2018 12:46

The porter 7518 is why I went with a water cooled unit, they are uber loud.

ger21 Fri 26 January 2018 12:57

Some of the square bodied air cooled spindles are louder than a 7518. Maybe not louder, but a different frequency.
A friend has a Teknomotor and it's almost painful at 24,000 rpm.+

The cooling fan in my Huanyang VFD is louder than my spindle fan at 10,000 rpm.

Just imagine.....I've been ruing my blue beast with a 7518 since my build... +/- 8yrs ....:p

Tom Ayres Fri 26 January 2018 14:19

They are “work horses” I’ve had 6 of them that I use for solid surface tops for over 16 years and only replace bearings brushes and switches once in a blue moon

Robert M Fri 26 January 2018 14:45

I know to well what you mean tom....I've too been working with them ( have 3) for over 18 I do this for a living !!
But now, I'm even considering changing the ones in my router tables for some 2.2 or 3kw an-cooled spindle/inverter kits vs my beloved, trusted, faithful.... 7518.....that even with top bearing replacement....still vibrate too much to my....say new std

Ya, work horses....but, darn noisy and vibra...tors !!
Cheers ;)

Tom Ayres Fri 26 January 2018 14:52

The 2.2 works fine for me, it is a true 3 hp unlike the porters rate at 3.25(more like 2 hp)

Robert M Fri 26 January 2018 15:26

Tom.....do the math !!
2.2kw = 2.95hp :p

BTW.....measure your PC 7518 amp under full load.....and then, you'll too discover it ain't a rue 3.25hp....

Tom Ayres Fri 26 January 2018 20:55

Sorry, a true 2.95 hp, (well its a heck of a lot closer to the specified hp then the porter cable at 2.4 hp) and I don't have to deal with the changing electronic speed control lag when under load.

Robert M Tue 30 January 2018 07:52

Spindle in router table ??

Done deal....I've committed to a new 4KW watercooed & inverter spindle kit directly from china !
Should have it in a few weeks ( not in a rush !)
Looking forward for it !!

On another note, but kinda same matter....
Is there any of you guys have ever set up...or knows one who has....set up a router table with one of those Chinese spindle / inverter combo ?!
I'm wondering if I'm in reason to think it's worth a try with a 3kw or even a 4kw on my router table.....

I'm truly aging.....as I realize I'm fed up though the yrs of tolerating this.....unreasonable sound out of those beasty routers (porter7518 ) !

Thanks, cheers

ger21 Tue 30 January 2018 11:34

I've seen one, but I don't remember where. You'd need some type of lift, as they don't have adjustable bases like handheld routers.

Robert M Tue 30 January 2018 11:49

Gerry, I'm figuring simply retrofit it to my existing router lift system !
I can't see why not?? even through some sellers I've ask either !!
( although, that's expected, they want to sell....but remains...not all are careless  )

Still seeking, I'm still...say, hesitant ?!

jhiggins7 Wed 31 January 2018 05:38

Good Morning Robert,

Please refer to the Builder's Log. In the comments field, you will see many MechMates with Spindles installed. I may have missed some, but I try to list "Spindle" in the comments if I see one in the photos or it's mentioned by the builder in his/her build thread.

Robert M Wed 31 January 2018 05:55

Good morning John !
Hopping all is fine on your side !?!
Been a while since we exchange ;0))!
How's your beast ?!

Thanks for your time on my new quest, but, in all respect, I don't see relevance to my latest questions ?!
Why looking at many MechMates with Spindles installed ?!

Later bud, ;)

jhiggins7 Wed 31 January 2018 15:24

Robert, did I miss understand this question?

Is there any of you guys have ever set up...or knows one who has....set up a router table with one of those Chinese spindle / inverter combo ?!

Robert M Wed 31 January 2018 16:42

Hey John !!
I'd say, maybe more I did misunderstood on what your referring and my question maybe was missing precision as it's may not been quite pertinent to here !!!?

Your reply made me thinking, you where kindly referring me to the builders log, and in the log, well, we're a CNC group, not a route table group, although, lot's of us using spindle and a router table in their woodworking shop too, why my question was / is ; as anyone have ever inverted a Chinese watercooled spindle
in a router table ?!?

See....we both somehow....guilty of trying to be ...say, friendly....:p :D
Be good bud !!;)

MetalHead Thu 01 February 2018 05:29

Robert,

I think he meant for you to read the list to see who has a water cooled spindle installed.

Je pense qu'il voulait dire pour vous de lire la liste pour voir qui a une broche refroidi ŕ l'eau installé (I can't speak French, just used Google translate on the statement above.)

:)

jhiggins7 Thu 01 February 2018 06:18

Robert & Mike,

Yes, I misunderstood the question. Thanks for hanging in there Robert. Thanks for the help Mike.

Robert M Thu 01 February 2018 08:44

Ain't that....funny, we do all care for each other after all ;)
that's why, here, we are known to be a special bunch of CNC-ers !
wishing all you guys a great day !!

PS.....remains, as anyone seen or know one who as "dare" trying to invert a Chinese spindle in a router table ?!

See...y'all ...( y'all from a french Canadian...:p:rolleyes: ).....
Cheers

I think any design today should be on the Y axis, self contained, no buckets on the floor, closed system using a CPU cooling radiator.

Cost should be less than $1K US at this point
