I found this nice video with a great idea on how to machine two sided pieces without fixtures, it does waste a bit more material, but I think the idea is great:

Did this today and it work great. I have to do it over again because I forgot to add some tabs but besides that it worked great.

Picture 1 Shows carving the wood and cutting the frame out.
Picture 2 Shows the piece being flipped over.
Picture 3 Shows the piece being cut out
Picutre 4 Shows the other side. (Matches perfectly)

Plz forgive the fuzzies. No sanding was completed in the making of these photos.

Tom, this is the old method for a 2-sided cut:

Good to hear from you Gerald, I haven't tried any 2 sided cutting and had forgotten about the dowel hole and pin, thanks.

A few yrs back, I did these trany prototype kinda using this “dowel” flip method !

Here’s a few pics....for your viewing curiosity !

Cutting 1st face....

pc310002_resize.JPG

Using the cutting file w/depth change only.

PC310006_2.JPG

Installing the part.....with strats sample ( to help pry after cutting.....and there all the same thickness !)

The final outcome :

Here Ya go....hope this puts an image to some....questions !?

Later, ;-))

PS....Nice to read ya again Gerald....nice to know to still peek arround !!

Lapstrake and stitch n glue boats.

I think lapstrake boats and stitch and glue are particularly suited to CNC routing. CNC can cut sophisticated strong and beautiful scarf joints from ply they can cut out the developed shapes, with accuracy, that will then twist into the compound shapes required by boats. Plywood is strong, flexible and beautiful.

Check out http://www.pinterest.com/dalerogers/caledonia-yawl/ for my inspiration to build the MechMate and projects.

Modernist CNC Made furniture

I think the history of CNC during World War 2 and subsequent modernist movement, bauhaus and the ideals behind democratic design are really interesting. Not only did manufacturing and automation drive significant innovation in materiality and design but it promoted democratic ideas for living. Flatpack furniture has to be one of the most iconic material innovations that came out of this period. The key in my mind is design. Anyone with time and motivation can build a box. But it takes design creativity to take the constraints inherent within material and manufacturing processes and make it a thing of comfort and beauty. These may be simple materials and simple manufacturing automation but they are, in my eye, beautiful objects that highlight creative design and innovative use of technology and material.

Check out my furniture and object inspiration that is ideally suited to CNC manufacture. http://www.pinterest.com/dalerogers/cnc-made/

CNC made joints

These joint examples highlight both the constraints of CNC construction as well as creative and innovative solutions to those constraints. For example 3 axis CNC Mills are unable to produce internal corners. These examples show how designers have worked around this problem by either developing solutions that hide the internal radius or highlight the internal radius as an aesthetic design solution.

Make Magazine did this great article on CNC made joint techniques.

Not trying to initiate a dispute, I just posted a link for a chair that can be copied or serve as inspiration, whatever its done with it its a problem of the maker not the messenger...

IMHO these kind of warnings are useless, they are not useless if posted in a thread of a maker trying to sell exact copies, or if you are anal, inspired copies...
