I have used expensive tap wrenches and cheap tap wrenches and they were all okay. For the MM you will only need one size, about 200mm. I have more sizes, but they are going rusty because they are never used. What can you buy in C.I. ?

Use a carpenter's brace. It easily holds the square side of the tap in the chuck, you can apply enough pressure on the brace's end while turning it with the other hand and it is much easier to keep perpendicular with the workpiece.
For me, it works better than a tap wrench. |

Tip: if a tap breaks, pour some nitric acid into the hole, it will loosen the tap. The acid will attack the high carbon tap steel. You can also knock it out with a hammer and a punch as the tap is very brittle.
Better still, for every 2nd revolution, turn it back half a turn to break the swarf. |

I am sure there are some companies in Puerto del Rosario harbour area who repair boat/ship equipment. They should be able to tell you where to get some basic tools.
Las Palmas has enough industry. Example www.repnaval.com Last edited by Gerald D; Sun 27 February 2011 at 09:32.. Reason: merged 2 posts |
