What switches to have on control box?
Hi everyone,
I'm planning my control box at the moment and was wondering what switches and lights you have on your control boxes and what you use? sort of a what I have and what I wish had on there? What is feasible to control by mech3 and what to control manually? Thanks Duckie |

On my Control Box I have the ON button, OFF button & the Power On indicator light for the stepper motors.
Have a look at the configuration menu of Mach3 will give you a good idea of what you can control from Mach3. I would personally prefer to have the ability to STOP the spindle from the PC, its ok even if START is not available... |

Ken Thank you, Looking around most people just use the pendant to operate things they need, correct?

I don't use pendant... I feel safer with the keyboard.
I subscribe to K.I.S.S. |

For me, a pendant makes moving the machine around very easy. I rarely have to use the keyboard with the pendant I use.

I switch-off the stepper motors power & push by hand to set reference position for the machine. So much easier.
I didn't even have the proximity switches installed Just weld some stoppers to keep the carriage on the rails... |

Ken,
Just be careful that those turned-off motors become generators and back feed the drivers if being turned! "I blew up a perfectly good SEW eurodrive this way once ! " |

Gotta be careful then... What happened? Did you spun it over an extensive period or just for a short moment... |

Quick short movement......armature acted like a generator and blew up the finals on the amplifier.

That is really rare, the motor a DC motor? Or with a high ratio gear box?
Anyone else burnt a driver when pushing a off-line stepper motor? Now that Sean got me worried... |

I often move my gantry by hand...cannot wait for computer to start up....but I push it very slowly....then I see my lights on the UIM Robot drivers light up. So it is generating voltage back into the driver, but so far did not kill it.

Ken, in the early ShopBot days, with Allegro drives, lots of them were fried like this. Depends on the drive design.
