Happy New Year to all.

I watched from Jury Duty our 44th President get sworn in and I am a very proud American. I hope he has a influence for change for our country and the world.

Hennie, you are a fortunate man. She is a lovely woman. You are a nice looking couple.

Baie geluk Hennie en Caroline! Ten minste raak dit beter elke jaar aan die vrou se kant! Die man bly maar net 'confused'.

I want to add my congratulations to all those celebrating wedding anniversaries. And especially to Hennie, "Thanks for sharing a photo of you and your wife." This forum is already very special and sharing YOUR personal family with the Forum Family just makes it even more special.

Now to add to the fun. Each time I see some Afrikaans language on the Forum that I can't figure out by looking at the context, I try AGAIN to find a translator. I'm afraid I'm limited to a SINGLE language.

So, I found a "FREE" translator and translated Johan's congratulations to Hennie. Here's what I got.

very luck hennie and caroline! at least get/touch it better every years at the womans side ! the man stay/glad but just 'confused'. ...

Now, I know "free" translators are notoriously literal and not sensitive to the context. So, given the context, my augmented translation of Johan's message is this:

Good luck Hennie and Caroline! At least it gets better with the years at the woman's side. The man is happy, but also "confused".

Am I anywhere close? Can you suggest a GOOD "free" Afrikaans to English and English to Afrikaans translator?

Regards,
John

The colloquialism around here for that is, "I can't get a word in edge-wise."

John,
Your translation program is not to far out. The 'happy' in the man's sentence doesn't exist. I will make a point from now on to put the English in brackets. It is a lot easier than any translation program.
Hennie, verskooning aan die vrou, ek het haar naam verkeerd. My vrou is Caroline. (Apology to your wife. I had her name wrong. My wife's name is Caroline)

The "bly" could have been "happy" (but not in that context)

Ek is bly - I am happy.

Nils, you should learn the difference between boy shoes and girl shoes. Or even between boy names and girl names.
