Free software for image edit and stl formats.

On of the best programs to open and edit .stl files is Meshlab ofc it is a open source program so no license required.
The best about meshlab is that can run in old pc's with an averange graphic card and can give you up of 60frames (i have old pc with athlon barton 2.5gh and an ati 9600pro 128mb and 1giga ram) you can check it here http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ .
The best open source program for photo editing is GIMP it provides the same ...or better quallity as Photoshop and have varius plugins for free it can be found here
http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ . A main problem is the complex Gui that can be change using Gimpshop that can be found here http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294 .also a collection of free plugins for Gimp can be found here http://registry.gimp.org/ .
Ofc i can't pass the Freecad one of the best opensource cad programs for windows you can find it here http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...itle=Main_Page also another simple program for editing cad files that worth to be metnion here is Qcad but not totally free it can be found here http://www.qcad.org/

An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

I will keep this thread updated ONLY with Open Source / GPL software.
I know that maybe all of you know most of this software but is good all of this to be under the same thread.

Here's a free v12 .dxf exporter that works better than the built in Inkscape exporter.

As it is described in the above blog :

Inkscape is a great open program, that allows you to create & edit many types of vector files. What I found was that Inkscape had an issue with saving AutoCAD DXF files that will open in many, If not all cad programs. Being the type of person that can't leave well enough alone, & knowing that dxf files are really just simple text files that can be edited in any text editor, I set out to search the net with my trusty sidekick Google.

Now my goal is to get Inkscape to save a dxf file as a version 12 format. After looking thru the modified Inkscape files over at bobcookdev.com , I had a good idea what needed to be done to get Inkscape exporting in R12 dxf format.

With the help of cnczone members, two sample files were tested to see If either dxf file had any issues, as of this blog post, no problems.

I have only tested this with Inkscape 0.46 on Windows XP.

Installation:
Download the zip file Inkscape_R12_Dxf.zip (4.51kb). It contains:

************************************************** *****************

simpletransform.py (this replaces an existing file)

mydxf_templates.py

mydxf_outlines.inx

mydxf_outlines.py

************************************************** *****************

Extract the four files and install them into ( C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share\extensions ) this should be the default path that Inkscape saves to when first installing Inkscape, then restart Inkscape to activate.

When you are ready to save a file in Inkscape, the new extension is DXF R12 (*.DXF) , listed in the "Save As..." window

Consider to give it a try, thanks for the info Ger.

The download Link for the inkscape is located here :
http://bobcookdev.com/inkscape/better_dxf_output.zip check this also http://tim.cexx.org/?p=590
http://sites.google.com/site/mydxfbl...pe_R12_Dxf.zip
direct link for download.

"Better Better DXF Output for Inkscape

Just unzip into your \Inkskape\share\extensions directory. Note that the updated ’simpletransforms.py’ replaces an existing file.

Note: There is still an outstanding issue with Grouped objects in Inkscape being exported with incorrect size. As I understand it (assuming the document structure sent to export scripts is substantially an SVG file), transforms are applied at the Group level, which is sort of a container that has the actual drawing objects (and possibly further nested groups) as its children. Guessing that to handle this correctly, rather than looking for transforms at the node itself, it must also maintain a stack of transforms that have been applied at the node’s parent level, and parent’s parent, etc. For now, it is an easy workaround to ungroup everything before export. Maybe someone with freetime can update this and release it as ‘Better Better Better DXF Output’ :-) (b3dxf?)"

"Comparison of raster to vector conversion software"

here is the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...rsion_software

and here is a part of the page with the software under GPL and Free for personal use.

This table gives basic general information about the different vector graphics editors:
