STEP 1 - Introduce myself, FFEJ from Geelong

Hello All, this looks great. I don't know what I'll do with it but I want one anyway. I live in Geelong, Victoria, Oztralia
Is there an overview that shows the various subsystems that need to be connected eg drawing software -> G code compiler -> Axis controller -> motor drivers?
Is there a recommended list of these components?
Has anyone got suggestions for reputable suppliers?
Has anyone got sample "drawing to compiler to drives" info available?

I'd like to build the computer, electrical and motor bits first, perhaps using that neat looking test bench, while I think of as way to sell it to my "better half".
I've got an electrical background so the wiring stuff looks ok, but I'm already envious of the mechanical abilities of some of the posters.
