Just an Update.

So the machine has been down for the last 3 days due to the computer letting out the magic smoke. What a pain in the rear. New one costed me a dinner at a hamburger joint for one of my co-workers that was throwing out a old computer.

When I first set the machine up I printed out all the setup pins, speeds but couldnt find it for the life of me. Must have lost it in the move. Owell. The machine is back up and running and I like the new speeds as everything is smoother.

So back to catching up to everything. I will be taking a baseball bat to it later this week before the garbage guys show up.

Vcarve Inlays

Here is my first attempt at Vcarve inlays. I must say it was easy and the MM performed it beautifully. Just the letters are inlayed.

I used a $1.00 PCB 30 degree engraving bit that I purchased on eBay from Thailand.

The female was engraved at 50ipm at a depth of .125
The male was engraved at 50ipm with a start depth of .041 and a flat depth of .125. I left a .125 skin on the back to keep everything lined up and back with a scrap piece for clamping.

Thanks Pete

Axel there is no finish on the wood just yet. I would tell you the species but I dont have that info either. My Co-Worker just handed the wood to me and I carved away.

BTW all the letter are only 1 inch tall. Photos make the project look bigger than what it is.

Did you glue that up and then plane it ? Or did you cut out all of the letters?

When I did mine I glued it, then resawed it, then sanded, real easy. Looks like he ran another toolpath over that, I guess you could route it flush then another toolpath after.

That is weird. I posted a quick reply last night.

I asked my Co-Worker and he told me it is Yellow Heart and Padauk.

Mike I did run another tool path over the top to clean it up and then sanded it. I was worried if I sent it through the planer it would tear out the inlays.

That's a beautiful work. This reminds of a friend who a coin sculptor for the Mint. He is able to produce amazing apparent depth with the smallest amount of relief. And those Greek friezes with horses jumping out of the wall but look at them from the side and there is only mm of relief.

Just finished up another box. This entire project was cut on the MM. I even used the machine to plane the boards down. Btw completed my second successful inlay.

Thanks guys,

Yes they are the Ron Paulk work benches. I bought his plans awhile ago before all the new tables he has designed. I have to say it was a well need and great addition to the garage. It also makes a great support and out feed table for my contractor table saw. For 3 sheets of Chinese plywood they performed beautifully.

I have another Gremlin in the machine. This time it is one of the X axis motors. Ruined a 2 hour job today as one of the motors tripped the protection on the Gecko Drives.

I think it is the motor this time due to the sound that it is making. Sounds like water is rushing through it at a stand still. If I move the machine a little it will move and then it seems like it hunts for a spot to lock down. Almost like it is in-between a step. Not a big deal as I have one of everything sitting on a shelf just have to find the time to swap it out.

On another note I was able to finally start a project that I have been wanting to do for years. I made a socket holder. I only did the 1/4 drive for now but the rest will be coming soon. Here are a few photos.

Nice, this is on my to do list as well, I will make them (plates) bigger and put them in my tool cart. They seem a bit deep though? Are you able to get them out with greasy fingers in the workshop?

Fox, there is a 1/4 of the socket sticking up from the top of the holder. I don't think it would be hard but then again I have a don't work with grease on my hands. Most of the time I have gloves on and a rag to clean them.

Axel I will find out later today. I have tried googling the symptoms with no luck. But it's nice to know have extras of everything so I can replace until it works correctly.

Why not turn the sockets upside down? Then you pick them up with your wrench
