I also have used a ShopBot. You are way more secure than the old models the Mechmate was based on.

As for your Z axis...
What happens when you power the control box down?

Does it sink?

I'm considering some updates to my old Shopbot, linear bearings, ball screws and a new z axis.

I reached out to Jerry via his business email because I too was interested in his linear rails. He got them from
Anaheim automation- tbi rails, 20mm.
The machine is apparently still running very well
