Finishing the gear reduction units
Pulled these posts from here:
http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...4&postcount=62 Here are a couple pics of the gear drive units, finished the z stage be done with the others soon, waiting on bearings. I got these from metelhead, I believe they are based on choppers design. I still have to trim the shaft down but I want to get it mounted before I cut it to the correct length. |

Gear reductions
Here are a couple side shots for you Mike. I will email you some pics of the mods done to the y plate, pretty minor.

Did you press fit the bearings? Do you think the shaft could use a grove and a C-Clip or maybe even drill and tap the shaft and put a retaining screw and washer in?
How close are the two pullies? Could we use a little longer belt? Looks great!! I'll take a look at my email. |

Million thoughts in my head. If you flip the pulleys wouldn't it make the motor pulley closer to the motor thus reducing the lateral pressure on the motor shaft?

It is a cutting working machine!!
Finished up most of the hookups last night, today we wired the router, soft start and all the E-stops. Cut my first part tonight, uploading video as I write. I will link the youtube as soon as it load. Thanks everyone who followed this build with special thanks to RadRacer #25 (my brother) who helped alot throughout this build and especially this weekend hooking up all the electronics. And thanks to Metalhead(Mike) for the help with the various parts, really appreciate that. I will continue to post stuff as I make it, love to show off the machine and the product it produces.

Bum,
I used cold roll 1/2" rod, milled a flat on it for the set screws to "bite" on. As far as the belt and pulleys, I got them from Standard Drive Products. www.sdp-si.com Belt (4)- A 6B 3-080037 Driven Pulley (4) - A 6A 3-72NF03716 Drive Pulley (4) -A 6A 3-18H3716 Bearings (8) I got from Rick at Superior Bearing, part number FR8. Let me know if you have any more questions and thanks. |

Belt Drive Plates
For the MetalHead Gear Drive Plates where and how do the FR8 flange bearings come into play?
I figure you need to use 2 FR8 bearings for each of the four drives required in the Mechmate design so that why you need to order a quantity of 8 total FR8 bearings. It seems that the 1/2 inch rod mounted with the SDP Driven Pulley A 6A 3-72NF03716 spins in the FR8 flange bearings. Are the FR8 Flange Bearing press fit into the Gear Drive Plates with the flange facing toward the SDP Driven Pulley A 6A 3-72NF03716? Thanks |

Chris,
You are 100% right on all accounts, the bearings (2 per drive)are press fit into the drive plates with the flange facing the pulleys. I got the prototypes from Mike and the holes were a bit big so I had to epoxy mine in, I am sure he has this fixed now. I can get you the parts list needed for the dives if you like, like pulleys, belts etc.. |

Dave,
I would be interested in your parts list for this as well. |

Heath,
Parts are as follows: From Stock Drive Products http://www.sdp-si.com/ Timing Belt: A 6B 3-080037 Pulleys: A 6A 3-72NF03716 A 6A 3-18H3716 From VXB Bearing http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PRO...FQS7KgodehH6aA 8 1616 ZZ Bearings (the link above is for a lot of 10 bearings, cheaper when I bought them, you can get the bearings anywhere same part number |

Oops, you need 4 of each pulley and I bought 5 belts, 1 spare.

Dave,
Sorry, maybe Im tired tonight, but are those bearings you referenced flange bearings that you were talking about in the earlier post? The pic at vxb looks like regular bearings with no flange. |

Thanks Dave for the reassurance and for the part information!!
I was wondering the same thing about those VXB bearings. I received the MetalHead Drive plates yesterday and an email explaining: "You will see 5 metal rings in with the motor plates. These allow you to use flange bearing if you want. Or you can go at it like Chopper did and make busings to hold the bearings." From that I am assuming you could either tack weld the rings into the one odd drive plate and press fit the flange bearings or you can turn you own bushing on a metal lathe, toss the metal rings, use the VXB bearings. Thanks for your time, more questions to follow but I need to do a little research first! |

Dave,
Started a new thread While gathering information about the MetalHead Drive Plates in the Common Assemblies & Parts thread: "Driving Mechanisms: Rack/pinion, gears, screws, belts & chains" I stumble on Art's thread: "What's the current state of the art timing belt gear reduction. " In Art's thread MetalHead links your build thread, it seems you helped in the proving out the drive plate design and your images of the assembled drive are great.. Thanks you both for you efforts!! |

I pulled this info into a new thread since it is a good topic.
The rings were provided based on the feedback I got from Dave on his build. I am sure later models of the plates will have the smaller hole and only use the beadings Dave has refrenced. But for the existing sets i had these flanges built to give folks a few more options. I have more of these "fillers" if others want them for their sets. Just PM me. |

Dave if you were doing these again, would you get belts a few MM longer?
