Engraving with a soldering iron

NOTE. WHAT I DID MUST NOT BE DONE WITH OUT SUPERVISION TREAT IT AS IF IT IS YOUR NEWBORNE BABY.

I took a soldering iron and mounted it on my MM to see if I can do some letters onto wood by burning it with a soldering iron.

and the results are see for yourself!

Hey Hennie. Really interested in the PVC wrapping. I did a quick google on it and didnt find much. Do you know of a good place I could read up on how to do it? Would the PVC wrap stick to aluminum? Care to share? If not, I understand. Thanks.

You work is amazing. Sometime after I build my machine, I would love to use it to create a custom kitchen for my house. Looking at what you do totally has me intimidated.

Charles throw those questions on the pvc wrapp?Havn`t tried wrapping alu Why do you want to wrap it? I did explain to I think Irfan some time ago on the process there should be a thread somewhere on it.
I am working on ventelation grids that one can put on the sides of cuboards as living by the coast one have a lot of moist in our cuboards this would be wrapped in white to match the melamine. I would use my MM to make the mould for it or a couple of them.
The one thing that I like about pvc wrapp is that you can clean it with anything and the colours won`t rub off, if it is a painted kitchen it is another story.

I have a friend that is making coffins and the question came up that can we wrapp a coffin with it so you should probably see some coffins soon being wrapped.

Only sides and top will get wrapped and they want to use chip board so it shouldn`t take long to rot.Pvc should take some time to go.

Thanks Hennie. I will search for that thread. I also did some more googling and found more on thermoforming. I am a tiny bit familar with it. I know that you can thermo form all kind of plastics. PVC being one of them.

Does the PVC stick on its own after forming or do you apply an adhesive to the wood before the forming process?

Why would I want to wrap aluminum? Why not? the PVC wrapping is a protective coating. Its just an idea. I always wanted to give it a try. I did once with acylic. A very simple setup that envoled a coffee can with a hole the the top. The can to rigged to a shop vac. I placed 1/16" acrylic on top and heated it with a heat gun. after hot I turned the vac on and it created an acrylic dome. Wasnt a serious setup but it worked for what I needed it for at the moment.

Might build a real thermoforming rig one day. Along with working with composites, thermoforming is great for creating shells. Which is exactly what I need.

You have to apply glue to the timber first, there are foils on the market that are preglued but we havn`t been able to get samples of it.

I will do that. Give me time. I planned on doing a few things to open up the kitchen more too. Not completely sure how I will do that just yet. I have an idea though.

My kitchen doesnt have a ceiling. My kitchen is actually one big room. A bit less than half of the house. This big room is kind of like two rooms but theres no wall dividing them. And the ceiling is,... is a bit lower than the actually roof of the house. We have old 1800's wood beams over the kitchen as a false ceiling. But I was going to take those down and then make new ones to work with the new kitchen. The kitchen was kind of built around them.

I'll take measurements, get some photos, and even draw up a model for you.

Thanks.
