Off Topic - How long does it take you to read this web data page hosted in SA?
Hi All
A favour please . . . . Another project that I am involved in has data hosted on a South African mssql server and from here it accesses very quickly. But, I need to demo it in Malaysia soon and I am curious to hear how long it takes people outside SA to access the data page? Could you tell me how long it takes to: - go to http://www.liftlogger.co.za/liftlogg...ionreport.aspx - click on 2003 - click on 6 March - click on Display Report button - wait for Google map to load with markers? Thanks! |

Thanks Greg, 25 secs would be tolerable for a demo.

From here in Somerville, MA, USA on a 20Mbps connection, it was 10 seconds for the initial page load, and then 5 seconds for the map update after the three inputs.

I wonder if guys from Asia can test it during normal business hours? |

Hi Gerald,
I got 31 seconds in Taiwan so that should be pretty close to what you will see in Malaysia. I did the test at 1:22 PM Taiwan Time on a Monday. |

Thanks David. South Africa is only starting to get to work now, and in about 2 hours time we should be up to full speed, putting max pressure on our local infrastructure. Could you try a bit later and see if there is a significant difference?
(For the record, from here it takes about 8 seconds altogether, with a max of 4 seconds after hitting the "Display Report" button. Should this service be made available in Malaysia, it will be hosted there) |

I am astounded at the relatively "good" speeds most of you are getting, South Africa's connections to the outside world have obviously improved a lot. Until quite recently it was a pain for me to retrieve my SA e-mail while I was far outside the country.
Thanks for everyone that looked at this link, I have more than enough feedback now! |

pretty fast here in Argentina too, 2nd time was faster than 1st one, so you may want feed your pc cache before the live demo

Yesterday, after 10 minutes, I closed the link, no map. Today it loaded in about 3 seconds.

Just some feedback . . .
In some locations I had good responses last week. But I had big problems with WiFi networks at the companies where I did the demo's. Their WiFi was painfully slow. I resorted to plugging my own LAN-ethernet cable into any point I found under their conference tables! |

Gerald, it took a full minute here for the full process. Opening the liftlogger website itself took almost 40 seconds. I don't have the fastest DSL service around (T1 down, 800+ up), but most sites open in about five seconds.
