Russell and John,
I appreciate you comments but the job is being done in a way that produces the combination of parts that the customer wants and the way they order the units. There are thousands of ways that the units could be cut. I could put multiples of one part on a sheet and have 5 different sheets for each unit but that is not suitable to the way the customer orders the units and efficent use of my time. The customer is happy and it works for me. Plus the remaining material is not wasted because it is being recycled and the customer is getting a rebate on the recycle. Please I am not interested in discussing this further. |

John,
You can put your white flag away. Hope your building is going well. |

Ummm, I don't think that's a white flag Nils. Take a closer look.
Maybe John needs help with his laundry. Enough stirring the pot. I'll go away now. Not all of us are as busy as Nils. |

Rails question...
I know you purchased the rails and added them to your aluminum angles. You bolted them on. I was wondering if using the tape or epoxy or Gorilla Glue would work to hold them on rather than bolting.
Just curious. |

|
|||
I dont think you would want anything short of many bolts at regular intervals, due to the downward and side forces involved here.
|

|
|||
|
|||
The down force is not carried by the fixing method....only the sideways forces are a factor. I suspect that a bonding method will work, but we need test experience.

IMHO, the rails risk more from external force due to foreign object knocking on it accidentally... Bolt & nut is a good guarantee.

Jack,
I like the idea that the machined rails are firmly attached to the Aluminum L piece which is firmly attached to the C channel. Yes, it is more work to secure with screws but I caution on the side of being firmly attached. |

In that case, would the compliance of the thicker vhb tape that we norally use be Satisfoactory or would it show up in cut quality?

MBA All-Star Logo
Last week I cut 8 Sheets of 0.75" Ultra Light MDF for the MBA All-Star Logo. The game will be played in Orlando. My client delivered the Logo on Tuesday (1/3/12) and tonight it was on the local evening TV news.
I will try to post the pictures. |

Nils,
Great work - as always. For those just considering a machine build. Nils machine was the first to utilize the BWC pre-made vee-rails attached to aluminum angle substructure. 7.2 : 1 OM Gearmotors, gecko 203 drives Milwalkee router (and soon a spindle) ....super work buddy! Just so every one knows, I cut the letters out and my client designed, put them together and painted the sign. It was pretty neat to see the sign on the local TV news.
My client did a great job with the design and painting. Thanks for the nice comments. Our machines can produce some neat things that others can enjoy. |

Nils, so are you going to an air cooled or water cooled spindle? What size? What is the main reason for the upgrade?
Just curious. |
