I would disconnect each wire at the gecko and at the stepper and use the continuity test feature on your volt meter (the tone), if it is a long run, get a jumper from one end and hook to the meter...

I am interested also. How are the motors wired? Bi polar parallel, bi polar series, 1/2 coil? Is there continuity between the Gecko and the motor on all leads?
