Ken - from the pics looks like you removed the heatsinks - have you still used the insulated heat pads below the mosfets.?

the fets need to be isolated from eachother.

be sure to measure resistance between pins on the extreme ends, more resistance means bad cable!

yes - what amps are you running them on - upto 3 amps I think you will not have to use even the fan, since you have the fan then maybe 5 to 6A

I have mounted the Tinysteps on a 1mm thk aluminum sheet with a 90mm fan behind, they don't heat up, just luke warm -

I work them up at 50V DC and 4 A - we have smooth motion.
