A quick and dirty way to see whether you have...
A quick and dirty way to see whether you have adequate capacitance is to measure the AC ripple on the DC capacitor. Just set your meter to read AC and then read the + and - outputs on the capacitor....

If we think of a model that shows how a stepper driver works, sometimes that helps explain why an "inductance" or a "resistance" would act one way with a round motor and another way with a square...
