2.2kw Spindle Cable
 

Is there a preference on the power cable being run to a Chinese 2.2kw spindle or is this something that can be picked up at Lowes/Home Depot?

I hope you aren't a insomniac like me. Finished putting my electrical box together. Need to talk to Mike about some Mechmate Logos. I laid out the cut marks on the spindle aluminum casting. I will chuck it up in the mill tomorrow and cut it down to size.

I get about 3-4 hours a night. That's good enough for me. Shoot me some pics when you're done.

Oh, be sure to order some ferrites as well.

I ask the lady about the ferrites and she had no idea, oh well!

You only need ferrite treatment if there are EMI or RFI issue, you might get away without. There is no exact science to it.
I don't shop at Lowes/Home Depot. I use left over stepper wire for the spindle, its rated for 10A per core after all. & It is shielded cable, you can contain the noise.

I just want to have them on hand in case they are needed. At a couple of bucks each shipping and handling is more so why not include in same shipment. Ounce of prevention...

I am not expert but I think putting the VFD inside the controller box is going to give you more noise problems.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

If anyone thinking housing VFD in enclosure will improve dust-proofing; Don't bother. Mine worked fine without.
Hurshy, it is good practice to have a healthy clearance between the sides of the VFD from the sides of the enclosure, can't remember what is the minimum clearance, you should find the number in the VFD manual.

When I work in the garage I leave one of the doors open for ventilation. Late at night this tends to draw unwanted people. I have been back in the corner working on the lathe, mill or Tormach to look up and see people shopping. They are then surprised to see an elderly gentleman pointing one of my numerous handguns at them. The steel for my MechMate was setting outside the garage door on saw horses and people come by looking for metal to salvage. They think since it has been cut, drilled, tapped, welded and then painted that it must be alright to take it. It can't be that I would ever want to use it. Had the same problem when I was building my plane. That shiny aluminum draws rif raf.

Putting the VFD in the box was just an exercise to see if it would fit. It will be mounted else where probably in a small Faraday cage.

Are you sure you live in Florida, sounds more like my local neighborhood in Africa...:eek:

That's funny Alan. :D Mike, apparently you live in a 'neighborhood', I live in the 'country' where I could leave something out for years only to have my wife ask me to move it or use it as a planter.

I was going back to England for a month so I took the top off my tabelsaw so I could move it undercover.

When I got back I put it back together. One part was missing.
The wifes son had cut it up to use for a speaker mounting.:mad:

I hope his speaker falls out...

I am wondering why did you order four wire cable when you use only three wires from VFD? What is fourth wire used?

Ground on 2.2kw Spindle
 

I would like to ask those who are running the 2.2kw Chinese spindle if they connected a ground wire to the connector mounted on the spindle. I took the connector off the spindle and noticed the ground pin had nothing connected on the interior. I also read that the ground is accomplished through the spindle housing through the mount and eventually to the frame. I hope this is true. Is there a change of ground loop if a ground is connected?

I would also like to verify the connection to the electrical connector on the spindle. I searched the web and found two different connectors being used.
One connector using the locating notch as reference going clock wise is

pin 1(?), pin 3(?), pin 4(grn), pin 2(?) the other is
pin 1(U), pin 2(V), pin 3(W), pin 4(grn)

If you have seen the manual you know that the person that wrote it
was not an end-user. Your help is appreciated...Thanks
