Off Topic - How long does it take you to read this web data page hosted in SA?

Hi All

A favour please . . . .

Another project that I am involved in has data hosted on a South African mssql server and from here it accesses very quickly. But, I need to demo it in Malaysia soon and I am curious to hear how long it takes people outside SA to access the data page?

Could you tell me how long it takes to:

- go to http://www.liftlogger.co.za/liftlogg...ionreport.aspx

- click on 2003

- click on 6 March

- click on Display Report button

- wait for Google map to load with markers?

Thanks!

Hi Gerald,

25 seconds here in Chicago USA. Using 15mb connection.

Gerald D Sun 08 March 2009 12:38

Thanks Greg, 25 secs would be tolerable for a demo.

click in display report and wait 10 to 15 sec. to load markers and text data.

6mb from spain.

From here in Somerville, MA, USA on a 20Mbps connection, it was 10 seconds for the initial page load, and then 5 seconds for the map update after the three inputs.

Gerald,

It took 26 seconds on a 500 K bit DSL line.

Gerald D Sun 08 March 2009 20:22

Thanks everyone.

I wonder if guys from Asia can test it during normal business hours?

liaoh75 Sun 08 March 2009 23:22

Hi Gerald,

I got 31 seconds in Taiwan so that should be pretty close to what you will see in Malaysia. I did the test at 1:22 PM Taiwan Time on a Monday.

Gerald D Sun 08 March 2009 23:38

Thanks David. South Africa is only starting to get to work now, and in about 2 hours time we should be up to full speed, putting max pressure on our local infrastructure. Could you try a bit later and see if there is a significant difference?

(For the record, from here it takes about 8 seconds altogether, with a max of 4 seconds after hitting the "Display Report" button. Should this service be made available in Malaysia, it will be hosted there)

12 seconds all the way to here in Australia. Not peek time and also a public holiday, but a test none the same.

Three seconds here in Tx. The mech site has been consistently fast for me.

domino11 Mon 09 March 2009 06:50

Gerald it took about 10 seconds in Ontario, Canada 9 am

revved_up Mon 09 March 2009 08:41

about 30 secs using a cellular modem

I am astounded at the relatively "good" speeds most of you are getting, South Africa's connections to the outside world have obviously improved a lot. Until quite recently it was a pain for me to retrieve my SA e-mail while I was far outside the country.

Thanks for everyone that looked at this link, I have more than enough feedback now! :)

PEU Mon 09 March 2009 12:26

pretty fast here in Argentina too, 2nd time was faster than 1st one, so you may want feed your pc cache before the live demo :)

Yesterday, after 10 minutes, I closed the link, no map. Today it loaded in about 3 seconds.

Robert M Tue 10 March 2009 04:13

From opening the link in a new window to getting the map = +/- 30-31 sec.
Cable, reg. hi-speed, early this morning ( 6h10 ). Montreal, Canada ;0)

Hi Gerald,

I've tried several times and here are the average results from Taiwan at peak times.

Loading main page:..........8 seconds
After clicking on 2003:......4 seconds
After clicking on March 6:..3 seconds
After clicking on Report:....7 seconds

Good luck!

Just some feedback . . .

In some locations I had good responses last week. But I had big problems with WiFi networks at the companies where I did the demo's. Their WiFi was painfully slow. I resorted to plugging my own LAN-ethernet cable into any point I found under their conference tables! :)

Richards Tue 31 March 2009 06:09

Gerald, it took a full minute here for the full process. Opening the liftlogger website itself took almost 40 seconds. I don't have the fastest DSL service around (T1 down, 800+ up), but most sites open in about five seconds.
