Almost there!!!

Copied from a David's thread:
. . . . . When I got my 20 tooth pinions, the guy I got them from didn't know much about what he was selling. Anyway, can someone identify this thing? It is 33 mm in diameter. I doesn't appear to be metric or U.S. inch stardard. Can anyone shed some light on this weird pinion? |
That could be a metric module 1.5 with the rack being 17 x 17mm?
|
. . . . .
Gerald, the rack is measured at 16 X 16mm. The place I went to buy it specializes is making custom pullies (maybe custom belt drive?), pinions, gears, racks, and sprockets. They acutually have the equipment to cut a blank from round stock and make whatever gear you need on-site. However, I was surprised when the man told me that the pinion I wanted was a standard, but he didn't know anything else. Believe me, I was scratching my head on the way out with four pinions and eight 1-meter long pieces of rack. |
Your gear pitch is definitely metric module 1.5. In the spreadsheet (Gear Speed Steps Freq Calculator.xls) you downloaded, change Module Number to 1.5. It should work quite well.
|
Gerald, thank you for the info on my rack and pinion numbers. Have I got the wrong rack and pinions? Should I go back to get "Module 1" instead of using Module 1.5. Will there be any difference in the performance. Will my machine run rougher?
|
David, I think your machine will run pretty well with that module 1.5 rack/pinion. Anything less than 20 teeth starts getting a bit rough.
Most of us are using around 30 teeth, and we then have the option to go to a smaller pinion for a finer/smoother cut (you don't have that option with the 1.5 module). You are lucky in that you have the OM motors with the 7.2 gearboxes. If you had direct drive motors, that module 1.5 would not have worked. You do have the benefit of a bigger/thicker/stronger/deeper gear tooth than the rest of us. In fact, I think you have a slightly better technical solution. |

Ok, recommend module 1.5 The 36 tooth?
1 unit 15,10 € !! |
For module 1.5 you can go for the 24 tooth. (keep the C dimension at about 36mm)

Rack Metric Size 1.5
I would like to know whether metric rack of module 1.5 is suitable for
mechmate. This module 1.5 is mostly stocked in my local market. Mechmate design is using module 1, so what would be the performance effected if using module 1.5. Thank you. LieS.T. |
Mulyadi, I have added some bits and pieces of other threads about metric module 1.5 thread. Look at the start of this thread now . . .

Selamat ya dengan rencana Mechmatenya. Mudah-mudahan sukses! Emangnya pak, harga module 1.5 di Indonesia berapa ya... Translation : Mr Mulyadi, Goodluck with the plan on building Mechmate. Praying it'd be a success! |
I am having the same issue, 1.5 module is easy to get, module 1 has to be imported.
|
Module 1.5 is a very good choice for us. Check that the rack is approx 16x16mm square (15 to 17mm is okay).
The ideal pinion for module 1.5 would be 24 teeth when used with a geared/belted stepper motor. For a direct driven stepper motor, you could use 18 or 20 teeth, but the cut quality will be a bit rough. This is the only down side of the module 1.5 - a bit "coarse" for direct driving motors. |
For those that would like some evaluation of the Metric Module 1.5 rack and pinion, here is my experience. I got the thing without even knowing it was a module 1.5 rack. In a nutshell, it works very well. There are no problems that I've experienced so far. I'm using 20 tooth pinions and it's been great. I'm using geared motors with 7.2 to 1 ratio.

In Brasil, 1,5 module is 17mm (italian Bonfiglioli).

Rack Metric Size 1.5
Pak Nikon,
Not sure what the above post says but I`m sure its relavant in its own way.
Thanks Gerald and David, 1.5 module rack will be in my build. |
Hi Gerald, on an earlier post you mentioned a 20 t pionion use for a direct drive motor. Are any of the motors at www.homeshopcnc.com suitable can you reccommend which one. The price is right especially with the special deal on Gecko`s. Are the motors strong enough?

What about chinese module1.25 racks
1 Attachment(s)
Hi
What about Chinese module1.25 racks? I saw on Chinese routers they use m1.25 gears on there almost every router i need advice on that by senior members can i use this size of gear? if yes then witch size & how many teeth should be coz i am in middle east & can easily import it from china, the gears are 660mm to 670mm long 22mm face hard steel |
you can use whatever module number rack but the resolution will suffer ,
module 1 has distance between tooth of 1 x PI = 3.1415926 so the 1.25 should be 1.25 times PI. get the number of tooth on pinion and multiply it by module, then divide by 200 full steps of motor. That would be the resolution of full step, if you use transmission multiply the number of steps. If the resolution suits your need then go for it ! |
Thank Danilo
for your help but i don't understand what is PI? can you please tell me in details? is it per inch? if yes so how can i follow PI coz I am millimeter use |
Pi is a mathematical expression, equates to 22/7 or 3.1415926
|
Pi
Module 1.25 is quite okay. But the standard MechMate design only allows for face width of up to 16mm. You will need to be careful if you use face width 22mm. |
Thanks Gerald
If module 1.25 is OK then what should be the setting for mach using 24 tooth gear? |
Read some more, the answer is nearby :)
|
Thanks Gerald
sure i will keep reading |
