Mechmate build - Wexford Ireland.

Hello All
I have been reading this forum for a couple of months now and I want to say thanks to Gerald and all who post on this forum for the wealth of information you have made available.
I started the build 2 weeks ago and I am now waiting on the laser cut parts from cncbasher and the v bearing kit from superior bearings. I will get organised with the electrical side of things as I progress with the Y carriage.
Heres a few photos of the build so far. I thought that I would use my dewalt saw with a 12 inch cutting disk to do the steel cutting and all went well untill the second last cut on the 7 inch channel iron. Bye bye motor!!!! I know it wasn't built for cutting steel but I was all smiles until I burnt out the feed coil and the armature. A little over 100 euro later and its cutting "Wood" again.
Regards
Gerry

That's a great looking base you got there Gerry.
Great start.

Thanks Greeny. I have the laser cut parts, the gecko g302v and the v bearings arriving next week. Time to clean the shed so I can make another mess.

Interesting way to mount your cross channel with a SHS underneath. Is that 50 x 50 SHS? Did you build the table bottoms-up?

drinksalot Thu 10 December 2009 02:41

Hello Ken. I am not sure what shs is but the cross channel is 75mm x 38mm welded to the 7inch x 4inch heavy channel I propped and clamped the steel and welded from the top. "Right side up". I hoisted it all in the air so I could weld the bottoms of the cross members and paint.
My main channel is 1/2 inch thick and very heavy. I was worried whether the roof would buckle while it was being hoisted but it was ok.

Gerry

Welcome and good luck with build. You are making nice progress.

KenC Thu 10 December 2009 03:07

Gerry
Thanks for elaborating.

I meant Square Hollow Section = SHS.

Did you see much twisting when you hoist the table?
Did you tried hoisting one corner of the table & the leg nearest to this corner lifted before the other legs lift?

Great progress! Look your very well organised workshop.

drinksalot Thu 10 December 2009 12:19

Hello Ken. I hadn't tried it but you got me curious and as the hoist was in position I moved it to above one corner and started to lift. It was about 40 mm off the ground before the oposite side decided to lift. I could nearly use this blue lump (mechmate) as a tuning fork. If you hit it it can hold a tune for a few seconds.

I am using qty 4..Gecko 203v with qty 1..PMDX-122 and 4qty 34hs9801 motors. Can some one tell me what power supply to order and maybe where to buy it from. Euro zone. Thanks
Gerry

Welcome Gerry. Looking good so far!

I have this info.

MotionKing 34HS9801 (490 Oz-in / 3.5N.m)--> price: $55.00/PC --> 3.0Kg

4.1mH half-coil/parallel/unipolar
50 to 65VDC --> 65VDC Max
4 Amps
WATTS = 65 Volts X 4 Amps = 260

If you purchase only the toroidal transformer, you need match to AC:
60VDC / 1.4 = 42.8VAC
WATTS = 60 volts x 16 Amps = 960
Capacitor = 4A x 80,000/42.8 = 7.476 uF --> 42.8 + 20% = 51.36 Volts

bipolar series
Dont match with the Gecko

Gerry, from the first post in this thread: Calculate the Voltage and VA size of the DC power supply for stepper motors/geckos, you will see that you need a 65V DC power supply capable of supplying 11 Amps max. (Ros forgot the 67% factor). A 60V DC supply may be easier to get and will still be quite okay.

I havn't seen anyone in Europe get these easily off-the-shelf, but I do see that MCP is starting to offer power supplies http://www.motioncontrolproducts.com...plies_v2.0.pdf
A pair of PS705 supplies could do the job. Suggest you give them a call and see if they have a bigger model yet.

Otherwise, it really isn't difficult to build your own supply: Homebuilt power supplies for GeckoDrives

Gerry

RS Online have transformers and probably all the other bits:

Thanks Gerald and Graham. I am sorting through all the info at the moment. I hope to have the power supply sorted in the next few days. Then its time for the kitchen project. I received my laser cut parts today from cncbasher and I have to say the quality is stunning. I will post more photos very soon.

Hello all.
I am just about to order based on the above advise for my setup a 65vdc 15 amp unregulated keling power supply. Are there any problems with this choice. Thanks Gerry

KenC Sat 19 December 2009 05:52

Hi Gerry,
You should go through Gerald's previous post religiously.

Gerald D Sat 19 December 2009 06:08

Gerry, that should be fine.

drinksalot Sat 19 December 2009 07:39

Thanks Gerald. The plastic in my wallet is certainly getting excercised this month.
