The size that you can buy off-the-shelf is the best size.

22mm are typically the cheaper ones.

Thanks for the replies. What I should of asked is how deep should the boxes be for all the cables etc.

This depth works nicely.....but ideally you need 75mm minimum to make it easy to wire. I personally prefer the 100mm depth box and drill my own 22mm hole in the correct place. |
The one pushbutton box, on the end of the gantry where the cable chains are anchored, can be a junction box for many cables. That particular box can be double the size of the rest.

I use 3 button boxes everywhere & a 4 button box at the cable chain anchored, I wouldn't mind 8 button box at every location as long as there is enough space to mount the boxes. Bigger boxes makes wiring a breeze.
Over-size is never a problem with MM build. There are just way too much redundant space to occupy. |

Thanks for the info everyone...should i use IP65 Enclosures?

Will you be flushing water over it?

If the floods in the UK get any worse he may well need them to be watertight!!! :)

Lol.... I ment to keep dust out:)

Some Ideas, I made 2 sub d connectors on the side of he box, one mail and one femail I have an incomming and an outcomming cable. at the last box a dummy is placed with some shortcuts to give the correct signals.
advantage: all boxes are the same, I can simply add a box. for trouble shouting, I can connect the dummy directly on my backpannel and bypass all the cables on the machine |
Since you are not gonna make it flood proof, IP55 is more than sufficient
