Well, hello there boys and girls :)

New Swede on the block!

Just recently came across this amazing machine and its site.
So of course like many of you, I got a bloody urge to start building.
Not really a beginner, did my own little gantrymill this summer, but of the size is never enough :P

Tips what to think about and do first are welcome, started planning some today, and sent out a request for lasercuttingprices for the essentials :)
And if you are Swedish, feel free to pm with info where to get stuff or other related things.

Welcome to the Forum. If you are getting bids on laser cut and bent parts, you are already well along.

Most people either start with the Control Box, which is more electrical or the table which is more mechanical. I started with the Control Box because I'm more familiar with electronics than metal working and because I had some used Stepper motors to test. But it's a personal choice. Of course if you start with the table you will very soon have a large machine to show and you will need to have a space for it...which tends to "commit" you to complete the project.

Nice looking mill you did. You're way ahead of the game if you are already familiar with the concepts and parts. All you need is an enlargement...:)

The thing im thinking about atm is, do I really need lasercut parts?
What difference would water make except that the engraving wouldng be there (or maybe water can be as gentle as laser?)

Laser would be harder to find as for water it can be found locally.
So shoot the answer at me!

And my first progress is finally done,
Printed the plans, cant have a site calling us not serious without printing can we?

And I found out that my local cutter also has laser and everything cnc-related you can think of. :D

Is there a upside of using laser for this compared to water? Besided engraving capabilities.

Laser is less expensive than water over here.

Right now I would appreciate some help with the table.
Planning to get the materials for it first since its easier with payment and shopping atm.

Could someome do me the favor of writing down the parts needed and the numbers?
I get a bit confused on how many you need of each :)
I mean something like this 2pc 50x100x1000 L-iron as an example

I have listed the steel required and the Qty of each required in my thread http://www.mechmate.com/forums/showt...?t=1919&page=2 My sizes are calculated on a sheet size of 2440mm x1220mm. Hope that helps you. :)

But if i get your list right you just use regular square profiles instead of the round ones with pressed ends?

Sitting here now planning on which metal to get and im stuck at 10 10 310 W and its friend. Is a 38x50 or similar rectangular good enough as replacements for this one?

Yes, rectangular (or square) tubes are good replacements for the round tubes.

Thinking about the mainbeam, having trouble finding one that is 70x180x70 and 21kg/m

Will a 60x180x60 at 13.2kg/m work or is it too weak?


Edit: just found the type i wanted, wasnt a regular profile as i thought :)
But still will it work? OR i need the 20-21kg/m beam.

It will work, but you will have more table flex, vibrations and a rougher cut than people using 20 kg/meter.

Gotten quotes for all the metall and now im just waiting for le cash, starting with some sheetmetal from a nice forumdweller =)

The heavy steel wasnt a nice surprise in pricing, but still cheaper than I thought.

About to order some v-groove bearings from Rick but i was thinking about the fastening of them.

How do you metricguys fasten them since the bearings have imperial-measurements?

The bearings are actually metric! :)

12mm bolts are a perfect fit.

Even though the measurements are in inch?
